Surely breast Is best?!

Or does it mean 'Breast isn't the best option out of FF and BF its the only option' sort of thing?

I don't think its really that clear of a statement to be made IYKWIM. Obviously its a statement to be taken in context along with the FF part but if this is going to be some kind of new campaign then I think it may just be confusing to young mothers.

If Ive made any sense at all there! lol.

I think it means that they don't want breastfeeding to be set up as some (unattainable in the eyes of some) goal, when it should be considered standard practice.

Think you need to read the original post and the article TBH...

the story is that breast ought to be 'normal'...

Disenchanted · 24/03/2008 11:26

I read the OP and watched the youtube video thanks, yes its should just be 'normal' but to me the state ment or 'slogan' Breast isn't best doesn't make that obvious. Its kind of muddled i think.

Well I think the point is that breast is best implies ff is normal / usual / the baseline.
Whereas bf should be the baseline.

mrsruffallo · 24/03/2008 11:32

Yes, the point was that breast feeding is the only natural and healthy way to feed your baby therefore not the best choice but the only choice

Okay closest analogy to try and explain it as this.

Think about Steak and Kidney Pie.
Saying "Breast is Best" makes bf analogous to Tesco's Finest Steak and Kidney pie - where the Steak and Kidney are sourced from organic beef animals hand raised by some guy descended from Robert the Bruce(I've no idea as I've never had Steak and Kidney pie but bear with me), and ff analogous to Tesco's bog standard Steak and Kidney Pie.
Most people will buy the latter because it is cheaper but still pretty tasty.
Saying "breast is normal" means that bf is analagous to Tesco standard steak and kidney and ff to Tesco smartprice steak and kidney pie - very cheap but bland an inoffensive. Most people would buy the former.
Now don't take this literally - i don't mean to imply that ff is cheap and nasty - it isn't! just about people's perceptions.

Does this make sense? Or is it a load of twaddle

Oh you really need to read the other thread, some great info there.

PMSL turtle

As others have said, the video etc is about saying that bf should be the norm and not some wonderful, you'll only manage it if you are really intelligent and work really hard thing. I don't think anybody is talking about a whole leaflet drop with a "breast isn't best" tagline. That is just what they used for the talk to create a bit of controversy, make people listen etc.

StealthPolarBear · 24/03/2008 11:47

This is not just mummy milk
This is creamy, yummy M&S mummy milk

Also, talking about the benefits of bf implies that ff is the default option and bf is the 'choice'
Talking about the risks of ff (although controversial) implies that bf is the default option and ff is the 'choice'
