Projectile vomiting whilst feeding!

rascal1979 · 23/03/2008 19:05

My 14 wk old DD (born prem so 5 weeks corrected age) has always been sickly and is sick to some extent after each breastfeed.

Over the past 4 weeks she has projectile vomited around 1-2 times a day usually early evening when she is often cluster feeding.

A few times she has actually been sick whilst feeding. Tonight she has done this twice within 10 minutes.

She wass feeding normally and without warning she projectile vomited on the breast - She was shocked but not particularly fussed by this and once she'd been cleaned up she wanted to feed again - putting hands in mouth and rooting etc

She is now hungry again.

Anyone else experienced this? or know what it is. Don't think it's colic as she isn't crying or reflux as not in pain but it's really getting me down as after all my efforts to feeds she brings loads back up and in such a violent way it's a little scary.

i would get it checked out
if has been for past month then unlikely to be D&V
could be something that needs attention
is she gaining weight?

rascal1979 · 23/03/2008 19:09

yes slowly about 4oz a week.
I have mentioned it to HV and at bf group.
no-one seems particularly fussed

Rascal - I wouldn't be overly worried about it but if it worsens and she's vomiting most of her feeds then it's worth getting checked out. It could be pyloric stenosis. The vomiting is usually really projectile - my neighbour's ds had it and he could lierally throw his feed from one side of the room to the other.

My ds1 was terribly sick as you describe but it was the speed of my milk that was the problem. I had to slow him down. Make him stop bf whilst my let down subsided and generally take control of his feeding rather than letting him guzzle. As soon as I took control giving him breaks (which he didn't like I might add!!) his tummy wasn't overfull and therefore throwing everything up. Could this be the case for you? Just a suggestion.

had it all mine. They outgrow it quite quickly. Makes lots of mess though!!!

Just echo what Saggars said - some babies are just 'sicky' babies but just be wary about pyloric stenosis. If it does get worse and your DD is projectile vomiting 3-4 times a day, then go to your GP .

My DS had it and it was such an awful experience but it can be corrected by a simple operation.

But, it is rare so it is probably just one of those things that she will grow out of.

Sounds exactly like my dd2. She was like exactly as you describe til she was about 6/7 months old and on solids. I ended up getting gaviscon infant from my gp but to be honest i didnt give it to her nearly as often as I should have as she just brought that back up too. GP and loads on here thought it could be reflux.

yelnats · 23/03/2008 20:04

And she always gained weight regularly.

gr8kids · 23/03/2008 20:10

Rascal don't get down about it, I've been through the same with my 1 dd and it lasted for months. Maybe to make yourself feel better you could get the doc to check her out but Im sure she's fine. I was feeling exactly like you are but got use to it after a few weeks (not a nice thought, really) but as long as she's still drinking and healthy there's no prob. Keep your chin up

Thanks for all your replies - Just seems to be one thing after another - although I do feel guilty cos in the grand scheme of things she is doing fine and feel like I'm just moaning but every time she does it I feel like crying

Thank you for posting about this - I feel so relieved to have read this as tis is exactly what happens to my 14wo - some days he vomits up most of his feed. Although not projectile as such often quite windy, but loads of it. We tried seeing the Dr but were just told to give infant gaviscon with each feed which felt wrong to me. The symptoms didn't match reflux or any of the serious causes, but the advice I was given from a breastfeeding group I go to was to express some milk (which I freeze) before feeding and this seems to help. I do find it stressful and frustrating when he sicks up most of the milk he has just had, but am hoping he will grow out of it as I also found that the gaviscon made little difference - especially as he spits most of it out...
I would definately recommend trying expressing before feeding though as this has helped me manage my flow/let down and has reduced the problem significantly. I am hoping he'll grow out of it though.
