Kendamil comfort or a different reflux milk

Hi all

First time posting and asking you can probably tell by the time, can't sleep 😴😴

Our DD (6w) is suffering from reflux and coughing up what looks like curdled milk. Today was the first time I've truly panicked as she began to cough/struggle with it. Our HV recommended moving to a comfort or anti reflux milk. I know kendamil comfort is not anti reflux but therre seems to be glowing reviews on this for reflux/colic babies.

She is currently on kendamil as aptamil and SMA in hospital caused her severe acidic vomit. We are keen to keep here on kendamil if we can as another change would be tough
How do people go about introducing a new formula if so? Every other feed? Or straight change?

Ofc I'm more than happy to hear other opinions/milks/ suggestions

Thanks all 🙏

Kendamil comfort or a different reflux milk

Both Aptamil/Cow & Gate and Kendamil have very different reviews. Some think they are brilliant but you do get lots of threads where babies are fed these and have the same reaction.

If the HV is recommending a comfort milk, I'd swap completely to another brand, maybe Hipp Comfort?

I'd also do it for every bottle. If you mix the two you won't be able to tell of the new one is making a difference or not.

If you do swap and babies symptoms persist you may be looking at Cow's Milk Protein Allergy.

Cadyeastman, thank you this is really helpful.
I was confused HV mentioned comfort milk when we were discussing her reflux as she said Kendamil comfort wouldn't be right.

Does reflux milk like HIPP cause constipation? She hardly poos as it is, maybe 1 every two days so I worry about making that worse.

Argh it's not easy, even now she looks so uncomfortable with reflux 😔

Lantau reflux milk has thickeners added so that it's more likely to stay down. I'd be tempted to try a comfort milk instead.

Comfort milks are more hydrolysed meaning that the milk proteins are more broken down making them easier to digest.

A comfort milk shouldn't make them constipated.

CadyEastman · 12/02/2024 09:23

Sorry have no idea where that typo came from! It should say Reflux Milk has thickeners added.

Anyway came back to see how you're both doing. Have you decided on a new milk yet and have you made the swap?

Tbur24 · 12/02/2024 12:56

Yes we have a pack of comfort milk that we bought with Kendamil so I'm thinking of using that as not to change her again or it's the 4th brand of formula in 6 weeks.
I'm hoping the transition between the two will be minimal... well that's the hope anyway. We have just had alot of mixed messages from HV and GP for what to do. She isn't constipated as such as it's never hard pellet like but she's not regular at all, it's 2-3 days per poo.

One change we did make that I think has made a difference is stopping infacol. That seemed to contribute to her reflux. We have an appointment with a specialist recommended from friends for her floppy larynx/ reflux/ potential CMPA as you mentioned next week.

My LO was the same on Aptamil. I really hope you get support & have it resolved. We were told they thought CMPA, tried 2 different milks no difference then the hospital said they weren’t convinced it was. We put him on Kendamil with colief was great for months, stopped the colief and he became really grouchy and barely feeding so put him back on it but stayed the same and became “constipated”. Poos every 2/3 days just like you say not pellets but thick or runny. He is weaning which is also a challenge. He’s been put back on omeprazole & given him lactolose to help fully clear his bowels.

Tbur24 · 13/02/2024 16:35

Oh sorry to hear, it's tough isn't it
How is he now other than constipation? Does he get wriggly and looks like uncomfortable? Any spit up?

At the GP now to see what they have to offer as HV also thinks CMPA

Quick update
GP has prescribed omaziprole 3.5mg for her. Hoping thst stops the pain for her

Today she also seems a lot more raspy than usual, like she's struggling a little or sinuses blocked.

GP wants to see how we get on this week and then will review for cmpa etc

His reflux volume definetly isn’t as bad as it was but still curdled & off smelling. Still wriggly. Won’t sleep fully through the night anymore which he was for a few months. He’s sounded very congested the past few days too since being on omeprazole again so might be a side effect of this (I’d forgotten until I saw your update). I hope it makes a difference for your little one!

Anxiousmammyagain · 20/02/2024 20:32

Hi, just wondering if you’d seen any benefit with the Kendamil comfort? I’m in the same position and thinking of swapping to that. We use the Kendamil first infant milk at the minute.

Tbur24 · 20/02/2024 23:40

So things actually got a lot worse over last couple of days with her being sick but the omeprazole seems to be working. She is slowly getting back to her usual self it feels, still a bit to go though. Our GP also prescribed pepta1 aptamil for CMPA but didn't really say she had symptoms enough for allergy hence we haven't yet gone down that route as it's quite tough to decide to change her formula again for something she might not have.

@Anxiousmammyagain in short, no we have not gone down the comfort route yet.. we have bought carobel based on advice from nursery nurse team to potentially use in current kendamil first infant to thincken and keep down.
However that said we know there is usually a cause of reflux so we ar better treating that than masking it, it could well be CMPA and nurse recommended using carobel to thinking aptamil as it's so thin and actually can make reflux worse

We are seeing a paediatrician on Friday where I'll discuss CMPA, reflux etc so will update you on the results there. Hope that helps and let me know if anything worth asking for you to the paedtrician

Same here. My LO is 10 weeks old with suspected cmpa. What was the outcome?
