Hi

i realised yesterday that DS2has had oral thrush and i have had nipple thrush for about three weeks since he had antibiotics for bronchiolitis i know i'm stupid just kept putting it down to other things then noticed the symotoms for nipple thrush whils looking at something else and realised we tick nearly every box!!

The problem i have is this, i went to the out of hours doctor who obviously didn't have a clue what i was talking about, he hasn't prescribed DS anything but he has prescribed me Daktarin Oral Gel for my boobs and told me to put it on twice a day but did not say how long for. After reading up on the net i have realised this isn't going to achieve anything, has anyone else been told this, or can anyone say what i should be doing!!

xx

When I had it, I had a cream for my nipples and dd (baby at that time) had to have something too. Can't remember what, sorry, as it was 8 years ago, but I thought both baby and mother had to be treated.

How shocking that the out of hours doctor did not know something so basic.

I've no experience of having it in nipples I'm afraid. Is this any help at all? Though I imagine you've fouind most internet stuff already. I often find though that a good pharmacist is more helpful than a Dr so if you have a good, independent pharmacy near you I'd go have a chat.

i have used the oral gel twice when I had thrush. It does work. You just put it on your nipples after each feed. The first time dd2 was given nystatin (SP?) drops but the second time when I realised what it was and felt it starting I just used the daktarin oral gel and it was fine.

I do know my gp said at the time if I could not get the drops I could use the gel for dd2 as well - from memory just a tiny bit on a spoon for them to suck off.

Your pharmacist should know this info anyway. I know mine was very helpful.

DumbledoresGirl, thats what i thought had to happen, i couldn't believe Dr. he looked at me like i was talking a foriegn language!!

Indith, thankyou for the link, i had already looked at it, good ol' Kellymom!! am going out in a minute so will definitely ask the pharmacist opinion!!

thankyou

eidsvold, will ask the pharmacist but the impression i got of the internet was to do what your GP told you!! if only i'd realised on thursday and gone to my fabulous GP!!! how old was your DD, my DS is only nine weeks so i'm not too sure about giving it to him, will see what pharmacist says!
thankyou

Have you tried something natural like diaper rash thrush relief by Motherlove?

olliesmum, I've been a bit of a martyr to thrush since DD was born (I blame the ABs I had after my c-section). I've tried everything, and finally cleared it with a combination of oral fluconazole tablets, nystatin drops for the LO, and daktarin gel for my nips. On top of that I've been taking grren bush flower essence and avoiding suger and yeasty things as much as possible, and taking acidopholus capsules.

Most doctors aren't really aware of thrush in the milk ducts, and the fluconazole tablets aren't licensed for use in Bfing, so they are wary of prescribing it as they have to do so at their own risk and aren't insured. But, if you've read up on it, you'll know that the amount that gets through in the BM is less than the amount already licensed for babies to have orally!

There is a good leaflet published by The Breastfeeding Network which has info for HCPs as well.

Good Luck with it; it's took me 7 months to finally get clear of it!

i used the oral gel for my nipples as well - it was recommended by both gp and pharmacist and it worked very quickly and very well.

dd2 was very young the first time.... the good thing about the oral gel is it does not need to be wiped off - just apply after each feed.

I then kept some around as soon as I felt that feeling - slapped on the gel and it stopped the thrush getting worse.

I didn't realise that about the gel swc. I'll bear that in mind for the future thanks . Although, if I feel the first tingle of it (I'm used to the signs now) I slap a bit of canesten on and that seems to do the trick.
