Bottle lids gone orange in the dishwasher!

Divvy · 22/03/2008 09:26

The lids and tops of the avent bottles have gone peachy/orange in the dishwasher.

Not the bottles or the teats.

Is there anything I can do to reverse this?

Also, do you need to rinse bottles with water after being washed in dishwasher before putting in steriliser?

ps ..yes I know my baby is now over 1 but this is for the next one really

I think it happens when there is something tomato-y in the dishwasher too. Keep washing them (rinse anything tomato-y) in the dishwasher and they'll fade. If you're really anal particular about it, you can buy new lids.

Divvy · 22/03/2008 09:31

lol.....maybe I should buy new bottles for the new baby...is that the done thing? I was jsut going to buy new teats!

if you keep dishwashing them with non-tomatoey stuff it will fade

you don't even need to put them in the steriliser after the dishwasher, let alone rinse them as well

PerkinWarbeck · 22/03/2008 09:42

this happened to us too. the orange has faded a bit over time.

Buda · 22/03/2008 09:44

My chopping boards are all orange too. It is from tomato-ey stuff.

Divvy · 22/03/2008 09:46

lol..I just love making more work for myself

Really...even after only the 25min quick wash?

There's a good long-standing thread about this - might save you some work.

MrsBadger · 22/03/2008 09:50

as dd is over 1 then yes
if she was smaller I'd do them at 65C but still wouldn't sterilise
air-dry them though, don't use a tea towel

Divvy · 22/03/2008 10:01

Thick question...how do you air dry them? With out a pool of water in the bottoms?

OP posts:
Buda · 22/03/2008 10:11

Put them upside down on a draining rack - once air can circulate they will dry.

WanderingTrollegg · 22/03/2008 10:15

And shake out as much water as you can first.

Blueskythinker · 22/03/2008 10:51

I do mine in the dishwasher, but I still sterilise. (DS is 10 mnths)

I wash the lids by hand as I hate the colour they go.

I obviously have too much time on my hands

Divvy · 22/03/2008 11:38

.....but once the air gets to them...are they still sterile?

Like I know that in a electric steam sterilser they are sterile for so many hours as long as the lid is not removed.

How does that work if you are taking them out into the air?

With a steam steriliser, they stop being sterile as soon as you take the lid off. Ie when you take them out to use them. So no matter what you have done to the bottle, it won't be sterile when you use it to feed your baby.

Divvy · 22/03/2008 11:43

What IS the point then.....? lol

FruitfulOfFruit · 22/03/2008 11:44

You know, in America, they don't sterilise. If there was a country on earth where you'd think they would sterilise, if it was at all necessary, it would be America, don't you think?

They did a study in the 50's and concluded that sterilising bottles was not necessary (or even helpful). But they couldn't get any of the mothers to believe the scientists, so they gave up and left them all sterilising away.

FruitfulOfFruit · 22/03/2008 11:46

There is no point in sterilising. Go read that thread that JackieNo linked to!

The important thing is to make sure the bottles are really properly cleaned and air-dried. So a 25C quickwash for a small baby is prob not enough. And any bottles that get turned upside down in the dw and left full of water need redoing.

Thats what I do anyway (have 14-wk-old ex-prem baby).

Divvy · 22/03/2008 12:26

just used the 70 mins hot wash, and the bottles have come out dry!!

The extra electric its taken to wash them hotter....must be the same as using the steriliser..ok may not be true..but its my story and I will stick to it!

soaking the lids and rings in Milton will reduce and often remove the orange hue.

Divvy · 24/03/2008 08:37

Thanks for the tip.....since I have been washing them at higher/longer temp...they are fading already!
