How much milk per feed at 8m

Hello! DS8m is ebf but I’d like to get him used to taking a bottle. We’ve tried before but it didn’t work well so back to ebf. Anyways, we’re trying again now. Today he took 50ml formula at one feed - does that sound very little? Not too bad?

i’m assuming it’s quite low as the bottle holds much more than that. But as I usually breastfeed I have no idea what an average feed looks like in terms of volume.

any help…? Thank you :)

My DD is 9 months, and is mostly BFed except for 2 bottles of about 120ml each.

I think that’s quite low compared to babies that are fully bottle fed, but they’ll be used to more, smaller breastfeeds.

I’d see him just taking the bottle as a win, and not worry about the amount.

If stay as a start that fine.

That’s quite a small feed, but as pp said, just taking a bottle is a win so don’t worry about the amount too much. Might be worth trying a few different teat sizes to see which he prefers.

My DS is 10 months. At 8 months he started to become disinterested in having large bottles as he moved to having three meals a day at this point. He would previously have guzzled a 210 bottle but moved to wanting 4 bottles of 150. I checked with the health visitor as this worried me at the time and she said that as a guideline babies 7 to 9 months typically take 600ml a day and then this usually reduces to 400ml a day at 10 months. This is of course only a guide though and depends on individual needs of baby and how much they eat etc. My DS has now started to want milk in the mornings and before bed but has started to refuse bottles in between as he is eating more, so I'm conscientious of making sure he drinks plenty of water at meal times. May be worth checking in with health visitor if you are worried.

Sorry, I somehow missed the point in your post that your DS is ebf...I'm talking from the perspective of a baby who has always fed from a bottle. Sorry, my post might not actually be of that much help 🙄

Lovely, thanks all for your replies. Very helpful info and pretty much in line with what I was already thinking.

I’m not worried about it at all, and definitely see it as a win that he took the bottle - it shows it’s worth it to keep trying and hopefully he’ll get more used to it over time and increase the volume per feed. I want to continue breastfeeding but having the option to leave him with someone else every so often will be nice
