Is breastfeeding always this messy?!

Am doing breastfeeding only with my 2 week old (first time mum!) and it's going really well except it's so messy!! My nipples drip a lot if he drops the latch for a few seconds while the other one he's not feeding off leaks like a first hydrant 😅 I've got big boobs so even though I'm using nipple pads i feel like they're constantly not in the right place and I'm leaking through my clothes! I'm going through so many muslins trying to mop up!!

Does it get better? At some point I'd like to be able to breast feed outside the house but I'm worried id create huge mess!

It will get better as your supply stabilises. I'd recommend using nipple shells to collect the milk that leaks from the opposite nipple as you feed.

@Koalaslippers thank you, funnily enough I have some in the post arriving today! Hopefully they'll help 🤞🏻

It's a learning curve for sure! It was like this for me in the first few weeks of feeding my first too. Like all bodily functions I suppose! It'll get better and more controlled the longer you go on. For now, keep loads of muslins handy in every room/bag/sofa and you'll be grand.

Hi girls
I’m finding it very difficult to crash out in the day when my baby sleeps. When they were first born I had some great naps but now nothing! So I am not catching up on sleep.
I am speaking to my doctor next week about this. As we all know any new parent is going to get poor sleep with a newborn, which I am 3/4 hours broken a night. Up for a couple of hours and back to sleep for an hour! Then up again.
I use to get bad insomnia Years back so I know it’s kind of mind over matter in the day. It’s not happening. I already spoke to doctor last week who said possibly I could take Phenergan.
Has anyone took this while breast feeding?
I am expressing from pump and using formula.

Yes it does get less messy, get a ladybug it collects milk on the other side without suction unlike a haaka (when can cause over supply so not a good idea in the early days). I used to collect a good bit in it and would sleep with it on my leaky left side so I didn’t wake up wet. Lots of cloths and breast pads, eventually you will look misty eyed at the drop of milk that landed and dried on your kitchen tile (I may wash around it)

I'm afraid so - I remember the days of getting changed to hear the baby cry and milk spraying everywhere! It will settle in time though as you get into more of a routine, usually a few weeks after birth. Congratulations by the way

Your supply at the moment is hormone driven. Every time you look at your baby, hear your baby, pick up your baby you'll probably get a let down. Breast pads and muslins are your friend right now.

It will start to calm down gradually and by the time your baby is 12-16 weeks old your supply switches to demand driven, so your baby will have latch effectively and deeply for the milk to come out, but is much less messy. Hang in there.

scoobysnaxx · 24/01/2024 12:55

Use a haakaa and attach it to the boob you're not feeding on and it will catch your let down! You can then feed them this or refrigerate/freeze it!

mobogogi · 24/01/2024 13:03

Yes but by 6 weeks it stabilises, baby latches easily and it's so much easier than bottles

rosed1008 · 24/01/2024 13:07

Does depend on the person. Both times around for me I was drenched in milk during the first month but it did stabilise. I did wear breast pads for the first 3-6 months in the daytime and always overnight until night feeds stopped.
