DS not feeding well, lost weight this week, dropping down centiles

15 week old DS been a slow weight gainer for for past 10 weeks, has dropped from 75th to 25th. Health Visitor advised me to get him weighed weekly - this week he had lost 2oz. Until recently I would have called him a 'good feeder'whatever that means...I have never seen anyone else BF in RL so have no idea if what we do is normal!

Now, he is fannying like mad feeding. His morning feed is OK, feeds well and consistently sucks, other feeds much more variable, with lots of coming off and nibbling. Have to relatch about 20 times some feeds and constantly swap him over.

Health Visitor said to eat more fatty food as I am too slim (she said this just by looking at me) - will this really make a difference? I eat quite a lot already, oaty cereal and fruit for breakfast, sandwiches and cake for lunch and then big tea plus lots of other snacks.

Any suggestions as to what else I can try?

Thanks

LittleMiracles, I do feel uncomfortable about you seeking paying clients via this board...especially as you did not make it clear women would be paying for you. Now I see that this is indeed what you are doing, I agree with seeker that this is not the appropriate place. You need to check with mumsnet admin about the right way to promote your services.

I am still puzzled about what you are offering as a maternity consultant - who regulates maternity consultants, who supervises them, and which professional body ensures safety and quality?

One issue you won't be aware of is that in the past people have contributed to mumsnet and have claimed qualifications they didn't have (there was a solicitor once, or someone who claimed to be a solicitor) and on another occasion someone who said they were a breastfeeding counsellor, and they had had two days training only and were not registered with any organisation....so regulars here are wary. That's the background, anyway!

StrangeTown, is your baby still causing you concern? Sometimes, babies do go through a fussy period like the one you're describing. You can phone any of the helplines, and there will be people who will take your call over the holiday. I think you're right in thinking talking to someone will help you.

Seeker I gree with you and have asked for all my messages to be deleted.

Tiktok and babieseverywhere-I was only trying to help sorry for all it was a genuine mistake as i am new to this site.I just want to add that i do have all proof of my qualifications and am a real person.I am aware of all you say as i have worked with chidren now for over15 years and would now appreciate it if you all get back to strange town please.

Littlemiracles, I am sure you are a real person and you don't have to have specfic breastfeeding training to give advice here. I post on many breastfeeding threads and I am just a nursing mum.

But if you claim a professional standing (i.e. Maternity Consultant), you will be asked for specific qualifications you hold, so the advice you give can be weighted appropriately, alongside other posters information.

If you post under an Maternity Consultant banner, you need to be clear with posters on here that you are posting as a person with 15 years experience of working with children and that you are not specifically trained in breastfeeding issues. Of course if you post as 'Littlemiracles' new poster to the board, you can post as you like

Hope to see you around on some other threads.

Well, DS had another bad night Thurs and was OK last night. He moaned and thrashed for a while after about 1 hours sleep, but I soothed him with sushing and hand on tummy and he re-settled and stayed asleep until 7. Feeding is still very hit and miss - messing and pulling and he is bringing quite a bit back up.

I have tried expressing and get can an 8oz bottle in about 10 mins. DS is more than happy to wolf 8-9oz from a bottle anytime....

We did try baby massage this week which DS loved.

I am just going to keep on with it - I phoned on of the helplines and we went though my latch and position when feeding. Think I would like some help on this in RL though so I am looking for something in my area. Am prepared to travel to Manchester - does anyone know if there is any of those Cafes there?

hi strangetown
i'm not in your area, but just wanted to say that i found the bf groups local to me by contacting the maternity unit where i'd had dd. in fact they had given me a list home with me which of course i'd lost!
alternatively call the Bfn or whatever helpline - i think they route your calls to local advisors (i know BFN do anyway) so they would know re groups. good luck!
