Does breastmilk do anything magic to chickenpox spots?

I know it won't do any harm to put breastmilk on what appears to be chickenpox on ds, but does anybody know if it will do any good?

I'm just thinking along the lines that if it's a good cure for sticky eyes and nappy rash then there's a good chance that it might help with the spots...

It's exactly the sort of thing i would do.

Samantha28 · 18/03/2008 20:45

it might kills some bugs... y'know...with all that good ..em..stuff in it

Samantha28 · 18/03/2008 20:46

Bm in the poorly child will certainly make him feel better

mawbroon · 18/03/2008 20:52

Yes, he has been wanting to feed a bit more than usual I suppose. That will do him good. He really doesn't seem ill though, just a bit clingy. When does the ill bit happen? Before or after the spots?

If you've had c-pox and he's bfing, he should be immune. Maybe it's not the pox

mawbroon · 18/03/2008 20:56

Hmm, I thought that was a bit of a myth though squeaver.

It's what my GP told me.

btw love your name - thinking of changing mine to Daphne !

Try a few tablespoons of bicabonate of soda in the bath water, it dries the spots out quicker.

mawbroon · 18/03/2008 21:01

I like the way that my name only means something to those in the know.

I would take anything that a GP said about breastfeeding with a pinch of salt btw, unless they have a specialist interest in it.

No BF, does not make them innune. My DD was 2 months old when they had it and exclusively BF. Have heard that if they get it berfore the age of 1 though it doesn't make them immune to having it again.

Sorry OP, don't know the answer to your question. Didn't try that when my DD had it - maybe I should have!

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/03/2008 21:10

I didn't even think to try that when dd had it in Jan. Bicarb in bath definitely helped though.

On the 'when are they ill' bit, dh rather helpfully got it at the same time as dd, so could give me a rundown on symptoms . He was feeling pretty rough for a couple of days before the spots, but then just itchy once they arrived/were drying out. Dd seemed fine until spots arrived (she was ill with high temp about a week before, but we don't know if related or not), but then had a few troubled nights, we assume down to the itching.

The immune thing is total garbage btw.

mawbroon · 18/03/2008 21:39

LOL, I'm paranoid. I've just gone into ds's room and put the light on to see if he has any spots on his face yet!!

I think I am expecting to find Mr Blobby in the cot in the morning!

Is that true about not getting immunity if they have it before one? ds is 6 months and in the middle of the pox, it'll be a shame for him to have suffered and not get any immunity for it. It's definitely not true that bfing protects them, as I know for sure I've had it, and ds caught it from his cousins two weeks ago and is exclusively bf. His spots have already started crusting over and if anything his mood is worse now than before the spots appeared which is supposedly when they're meant to feel roughest. He's completely clingy and grizzly all day long.

Samantha28 · 19/03/2008 11:46

DS1 had it quite badly when he was 15 months old and breast fed. He only had BM for days as was off his food & very clingy and whiny

We covered him in calamine cream ( not lotion) and kept him in old PJs. This kept the scabs moist so they were not as itchy and didn't come off. If they come off too soon the child will get scars. No bathing if possible

He was prescribed Piriton by Dr for the itching but it made him very agitated. But it helps most children I believe

MrsMar · 19/03/2008 13:26

Sadly you can't give piriton to under ones, poor ds has got loads of spots in his ears and is really bothered by them. They've all scabbed over now so at least we're on the downhill run now.

hi my lo who is 6 months old and only ever had breast milk got chicken pox from his sister when he was 5 mths old, he did get it very mild though and was untroubled by it whereas his sister who is 2 and a half and is no longer bf had about 100 spots and had a couple of rough days with it.
