Breastfeeding help

Had a section at the weekend. I took formula to hospital and baby was drinking formula fine.

Came home, had a shower and my milk started coming in so I thought I'd try with my newborn and see what she did. She latched on fine and has been drinking straight from the breast which is good.

I wasn't sure if she was getting enough milk but she was still burping, pooing and peeing so figured she must be getting something.

Later on tonight she was being really fussy at the breast, doing that rooting thing eventhough my nipple was right there. I wasn't sure if she was maybe hungry so I gave her some formula. Not sure if that was the right thing to do or not?

I'm just so worried she's not getting enough milk from me but there is defo milk coming out.

Why was she fussing at the breast?

I’m one month in. It sounds like clustering. My son does this too…. Goes 2-3 hours most of the day and 4-5 hours overnight. But from about 4pm -9. Pm he feeds almost hourly. I top him up with formula / expressed breastmilk when I need a break. Sounds like you are doing just fine just feed when he seems hungry but don’t feel too bad if you offer formula. I was doing about 50/50 for the first few days and by about 2 weeks it naturally developed to about 80/90% boob. Good luck!

All sounds good to me.

They can fuss.

If you want to breastfeed then just keep putting her to the breast and keep an eye on wet nappies. She shouldn't need any formula, but if you do want to give it make sure you keep the volume small, like 30-60ml.

There's a lot of faith needed at the beginning!

@Tryingtohelp12 @cheerfulsunday thank you both for the advice. I think age is doing well I just was t sure about the fussing. I've now read a bit about cluster feeding and it makes sense. I felt bad thinking she was starving and not getting enough milk from me!

She's trying to increase your milk supply (not that she know this of course!).

Milk removal = milk production. So her looking to feed straight after you've fed her is totally normal. Cluster feeding as PP have said.

You want to be feeding at least 10-12 times a day (often more) and have at least 6 wet and 3 dirty nappies in the first few weeks.

Sounds like you're doing all the right things (as is she!). Congratulations and good luck.
