Help - 10 week old baby fussing whilst feeding!

Hi all, I created this account this morning to seek some advice as I’m at my wits end and ended up in tears trying to feed my 10 week old baby this morning.

First off, she is a colicky baby with silent reflux and uses infant gaviscon in her bottles. She is also on Aptamil Pepti 1 milk for possible CMPA. She has been on MAM bottles since birth and we have gradually moved up teat sizes from 0 to 2 (which we are currently using) when we realise she begins to take or want more milk. These past couple of weeks, starting at when she was around 8 weeks old, she has been extremely fussing whilst feeding. As soon as the bottle goes in her mouth she will take it for a few minutes and then starts to turn her head and then eventually starts kicking her legs, waving her arms about, going bright red in the face and screaming. We take the bottle out and burp her then try to continue the feed then it’s a couple of seconds of feeding then back to being so upset she won’t feed. She should be on 6oz and I’m lucky if I get 3/4oz out of her on some feeds. It’s so strange because she will sometimes try to eat her hands after this so we offer the bottle again but she’s adamant she doesn’t want it! I’m usually lucky with her midday feed as she will usually take the whole 6oz or 5oz but is still so fussy.

Can anyone advise if there’s anything else we should do? I have tried changing the positions I’m feeding her in. We upped the teat size from 1 to 2 when she started the fussiness but this has not helped. Should we change bottles? If so, can anyone recommend what bottles to change to? It’s strange because MAM bottles are usually what people end up changing to not from! Just at a loss on what to do and really fed up of every feed being so stressful for both her and myself/Husband. Thank you.

EDIT: I should also add I have already spoken to the HV and GP about this but they are not very helpful. Just saying that this is within the normal realm of how healthy babies can behave and not to worry as long as she has enough wet and dirty nappies (which she does). :(

I'm no expert but i think you need to persist with what you are doing, and go back to the gp if not settled to see if she needs something more than that gaviscon for her reflux? Did her reflux symptoms look like this to start with?

Thank you for responding! I did mention if there was anything else we could try but the Dr didn’t mention anything, I wondered if omeprazole would help her so will call tomorrow to see if they can prescribe her some to try. Her reflux symptoms were being unsettled more after a feed rather than during, and we can hear her swallowing it back down rather than spitting it up.

Hi - did you get anywhere with this? I have exactly the same with my little boy although only just started the last day!

Gas. I have this with mine though I'm breastfeeding. I carry him around if he fusses, I distract him, do bicycle legs, tummy time then try again. It works quite well.

Hello! Oh I honestly feel for you, I genuinely felt helpless and hated seeing her in so much pain. We eventually got her seen by the paediatric team at our hospital who prescribed her 5mg of omeprazole and the difference was night and day just 2 days after her going on it! Started draining her bottles and enjoying feeding again, no fussiness or upset after a feed. We’re weaning her now so that also helps alot. So we believe it was her silent reflux causing her so much pain, poor thing :( Worth mentioning to your GP if it continues with your little boy x

My baby is doing this now aswel it’s like reading the post about her. She’s 8w 5d, But I can only get 1-2oz into her every 3-4hrs if I’m lucky night time she will drink 3oz cause she so hungry. On neocate and omeprazole stopped the omeprazole after 1 week because she was getting worse… did it get any better for you. I feel like the worst mother ever. I’m out of options.
