Is Follow On formula the same thing as Hungry Baby formula?

My HV has told me to try my 4.5 mo son on Follow On formula to see if it makes any improvement on his sleep. She seems to think that it or weaning him onto solids is a good idea. I'm reluctant to do so as I think it's too early for his wee body. Should I just continue with his usual Hipp milk.

No it's not it contains more iron and is thinner to allow room for solids I don't see how this would help his sleep she is talking bollocks. Just continue with the Hipp and try not to start solids until 6 months, milk fills them up more than solids at this age anyway.

at your hv. We tried hungry milk for our ds when he was little nd it made no odds to his sleep anyway.

Thanks girls,
I did suspect she was talking a load of old cobblers anyway. Honestly, you'd think HVs would be more up to date with their info.

Hungry baby is meant to be for when babies can take 8oz straight and still seem hungry.

Follow on is for babies who are six months or older.

Your HV sounds a bit

used follow on with my eldest of three, for a few months, dropped it as bad for her - too many nutrients, constipating too - babies don't need this follow-on if they have a good diet. Nurseries don;t use or recommend it. Your HV is wrong; event the manufacturers say only after 6 months. SMA white though was ok for mine, but did not use it as early as you as BF long time. Get them onto cows as soon as poss after 12 months - don;t be conned by the advertising. Obviously BF as long as poss at the same time if you can.
What about very slowly starting some solids - pear etc, although advice is from 6 months, this has only recently changed, and my first two were on solids before 6 months and did them no harm.

Could be many reasons for unsettled sleep - teething?

Follow on milk is for after 1 year!

Hungry baby formula for those babies who wolf down 8oz and are still looking for more.

Solids don't make babies sleep unless they're being kept awake by hunger - do you think this is the case?

BoysOnToast · 18/03/2008 11:52

as far as i understand it, follow on milk is for after 6m. the difference being that it has iron in it, and babies are born with up to 6m iron in their system anyway, so dont need it.

there is so much confusion in this area, it is really disturbing! can we not start a campaign to make sure HCP's are made to keep up to date so that we at least have a reliable source of factual information?? this HV should be bombarded with info she is compelled to read and understand.

hungry milk is for babies who take 8oz of first milk and still look for more - it is harder to digest and is supposed to make your lo feel fuller for longer (I did use it for ds from around 4 months and he did seem more settled).

Follow on milk is from 6 months (although some brands have milks from 6, 9 and 12 months, each one getting more expensive!!). It is more like first milk than hungry milk and will make little difference to your lo's sleep - your lo is also too young for it anyway - maybe she meant hungry milk and got a bit confused by what it's called.

Hungry baby milk has protein which is casein dominant, and which takes longer to digest, as opposed to the usual 'stage one' or 'first formula' whose protein is whey dominant. Both are legally permitted to be marketed for babies from birth. There is nothing by way of decent research to show casein-dominant is for babies who take 8 ounces - that is pure marketing on the part of manufacturers.

Follow on formula has more iron in it and can only legally be marketed to babies from 6 mths.

The fact there is so much confusion in this topic area is not mothers' fault - if even HPs get it wrong

solids won;t necessarily help him sleep either

4.5 months is still tiny

an upset tummy or a reaction to a food can unsettle a baby even more and make their sleep pattern worse

and also the tiny amoutn of food they can take is not really worht it in terms of filling them up

if he is not finishing 8 oz bottes, i would not even consider hungrier baby milk, even if he was, it can still give little ones a tummy ache
