3 month old formal and breast feeding

Hi Mumsnetters, hope you and your LOs are all well.

My son is 3 months old. Recently for a month he refused bottle although he was combibfed. I think this was down to me being very tired during nights and breastfed him when he woke up at night rather than give him a bottle so he got used to breast.

I done research and changing bottles was recommended even my colleague suggested it. So I bought a Mam one and my goodness thank God it worked. So he is slowly getting used to it again.

However, after drinking bottle he insists on having breast milk even if for 2 or 3 minutes and falls asleep on breast. Always he sleeps after breastfeeding.

If I am breastfeeding, how many ounces of formula milk am I supposed to give throughout the 24 hour period?

It says 5 ounces on the back of the formula pack 6 times within 24 hours but I also breastfeed on demand so am very confused.

Also, he has started a habit where he constantly chews on his hands like full on, I've even tried matchstick monkey but he puts in his hands not long after. It's so frustrating cos I keep getting anxious and have to watch him 24/7. I have PND too so that doesnt help. Why is he chewing his hands constantly, I don't know, I used to think it's because he is hungry but he does it all the time. Can someone please explain why this may be?

Thank you in advance.

Chewing hands is not a sign of hunger at this age; they do it in an exploratory manner and also for comfort.

Speak to your health visiting team regarding feeding, you could probably drop the formula (step down method) if you're BF all the time. However please discuss with them as they can get a full feeding history and advise accordingly.
