Inverted nipple and breastfeeding

Any successful stories of breastfeeding with inverted nipples? Or/and any tips please 🙏🏼 I have one inverted nipple after having mastitis. I couldn’t BF DS due to being tongue tied, and would love to try this time :)

Exactly what happened to me, I ended up just feeding from one, whilst attempting to express from the other with a small amount of success. It worked for me but not sure this is actually recommended!

A decent latch will involve most of the areola, rather than just the nipple. In fact a lot of milk comes out of the areola rather than the nipple itself! Youtube has some good vids on establishing the best latch if you need any guidance there.

I managed with both dds. It was tough and no support from midwives at the time. I got a nipolette and would use it to keep my inverted nipple out for latch on. I don't know if they are even available on the market now but they really helped.

Hopefully someone else will have some other advice to help.

This kind of thing, looks intimidating but honestly was easy to use.

Use a shield on that side, it'll help with tongue tie too. No doubt after a few weeks/months baby will have sucked it out. I used to have flat nipples and now I could hang a coat on them!

brilliant thanks everyone! I’ll have a look into nipple shields etc ❤️ x

One inverted, one flat nipple here - hospital feeding expert recommended nipple shields, which we used for a few weeks. Over time I would take them off one she got the feed started and then try latching straight into the nipple. DD got the hang of it and BF for over a year. In the end the inverted one was her “favourite”. Good luck!

Absolutely! Many mothers successfully breastfeed with inverted nipples. Consulting a lactation consultant before birth can offer personalized tips. Techniques like nipple stimulation, using a breast pump, and trying different nursing positions can help ease breastfeeding with inverted nipples. It might take some experimentation, but with patience and support, it's possible to breastfeed successfully. Best of luck!

I fed 2 children with flat nipples, I used nipple shields. Some people can wean off using shields but it didn't work for me. Even after pumping my nipples went straight to being flat again.

I was very lucky and successfully breastfed two babies before I even realised that mine were inverted Blush

and then breastfed a third!
