Breast to bottle - how long before reoffering breast?

6 mth old DS doesn't want to take a bottle. I would like stop breastfeeding for a mixture of reasons (going back to work, someone else to do nightfeeds, wedding were baby not invited etc) but so far have had no real success in getting him to take a bottle. I would like to stop feeding gradually for both our sakes, although he seems to have other ideas.

Last time I tried in earnest, I managed to get him to take a Playtex bottle 3 days in a row, but each day he cried for longer before taking it (30mins day 1, 45 mins day 2, 1.5 hrs day 3) that it just didn't seem to be going anywhere. As I know he won't let himself starve, I thought about trying for a day or two where he would only be offered the bottle to try and reduce the resistance. The plan is to only offer bottles that day and continue with bottles only until he accepts them happily and then try mixed feeding. Has anyone tried someone similar and how'd it go?

Hi chicken, I think now he's 6 months you might be able to skip the bottles and go straight to a cup - how about something like this, which he might take to with less protest?

i had this for similar reason with my dd. could someone else try feeding him?
no-one else could my dd ( she refused even worse for them than me), but know some people this has worked for. other than that persevere it will come in the end.
my dd just changed aftera couple of months of trying to get her to take bottle, to not wanted boob at all, i had hoped to combine

Have you tried different brands of bottles/teats/flow rate? DS (4 month) screams at some but accepts others. I have better success with faster flowing teats and an assymetric teat shape. Alos, maybe start with giving him EBM so that the tast is familiar at the beginning?

Roastchicken - sorry i have no advice but just wanted to say I'm in the same position so thanks for asking the question. Seeing as we're told to breastfeed till six months there MUST be a way to switch to the bottle then, but it seems impossible, doesn't it?

My ds will sometimesdrink a little from a cup during the day but there's no way we'd make it through the night that way. He'd wake up irreversably and get us both soaked! So I'm sure the move has to be to a bottle. How have you managed at nights - have you just reverted to breastfeeding?

Thanks for your messages I've got every brand of bottle on the market and so far have had most success with Playtex with a latex teat. At nights he breastfeeds a lot (a major reason behind me wanting to stop). I'm going to try and only do bottles on Fri when DH is around.
