Breastfeeding and dieting....

sensible or not?

I'd like to lose weight, but don't want to do anything stupid.

So - do I have a good excuse for continuing to eat chocolate, or should I get on with the salads?

Eat the chocolate and be happy.

hercules1 · 15/03/2008 11:45

You'd have to be bordering on malnourished for it to affect your milk.

I never lost weight whilst bfing my 3 dc until i stopped eating crap tbh. I went on a diet when dd was 4 months or so and i lost 3st for my wedding. Never affected bfing (still feeding her now) but did lose loads of weight.

squigglywig · 15/03/2008 11:51

I guess that'll teach me to ask questions I don't really want the answer to No more chocolate for me then!

Congrats on losing 3 stone!

I don't want to do a diet as such (used to be anorexic - wary of raising past demons). Hmmm - no way round this sensible eating and exercise thing is there. Bugger.

I honestly ate more when on a healthy eating plan than when i wasn't. I have been slacking off,eg too much wine and take aways but back on it and hoping to lose the last 1.5st(groan)

I do think tho that you should have occasional treats!!! You deserve it don't you??

Bouncingturtle · 15/03/2008 14:29

Squigglywig - I'm trying to lose weight as well - after I had ds, was over a stone heavier than before pg, and I was 3 stone overweight then!
There is some good advice on Kellymom if you are serious about losing weight. I'm doing Slimming World which has a plan for breastfeeders. I think Weightwatchers also have a plan for breastfeeders.
If you generally eat a healthy diet and just cut out the biccies, and crisps, then you may find you start losing weight anyway.

andiem · 15/03/2008 14:30

I have done ww and lost 18lbs whilst exclusively bf you get extra points to cover you and I just used them for choc
have also been exercising twice a week at least

DixiePixie · 15/03/2008 14:49

I lost a fair bit of weight doing the Paul McKenna "I can make you thin" thing (i.e., not dieting, but eating slowly and teaching myself to notice when I was full and stopping at that point, rather than ploughing on regardless.

(I've since fallen off the wagon - when I realised that I still felt dowdy and frumpy - big or slim - and I might as well console myself with extra cake!!)

squigglywig · 15/03/2008 18:00

Oooh - thanks for that Kellymom link.

I'm a bit wary of going for any plan as such - I know what I'm like and I'd end up getting all obsessive over it.

I don't eat crisps (don't like them) or biscuits (just don't think to buy them). I do have sugar in tea - and seriously crave chocolate or sweets during late evening/night feeds. I know I should swap to fruit but, sorry, a handful of raisins is NOT the same and never will be.

I don't snack in the day, and I cook from scratch each night. I do some exercise daily - either walking with sling/pram or dancing like a loon round the living room.

Where am I going wrong??

When i had my six week check, my GP told me that we would talk about me losing weight after i've stopped BF as i couldn't diet whilst BF.

beansprout · 15/03/2008 21:26

I am bf and just eating sensibly and doing a fair amount of walking. Lots of fruit, not eating too much at meal times, not nibbling too much between meals etc. Am steadily losing weight.

RGPargy · 15/03/2008 22:13

Ah see, that's my problem. I'm eating tons of chocolate lately () and really need to cut down on my portion sizes.....

belstaff · 15/03/2008 23:09

does bfing make you more hungry? i feel more hungry is it coz of bfing or am i just being greedy!?

RGPargy · 15/03/2008 23:33

It does make you more hungry and thirsty apparently, although as far as i'm concerned, there's a greed element in there too.

Dalrymps · 15/03/2008 23:46

I heard that the advice not to diet whilst bf is to protect you, it shouldn't affect the quality of your milk if it's just a sensible eating type of diet... I think weight watchers do a special diet for bf women maybe you could look in to that. Might be an idea to just try and eat healthy and do some light excercise, easier said than done I know. Good luck anyway
