Sma alfamino formula question?

7 week baby been prescribed SMA alfamino formula as very gassy and unsettled bouts of gas. GP said trial for 1 month. My question is how is it viewed this SMA alfamino is it generally known to be good? Do babies thrive on it? I made it up and it’s very watery and thin and does not smell that good, baby seems to just having it like regular milk not refusing it but it doesn’t smell nice at all or creamy. This is is how it looks in the bottle abit grainy even though it’s throughly been mixed

It smells horrible doesn't it! It also looks very different from other formulas.

We used it at 10 months old as our daughter has a dairy allergy. It is very commonly prescribed for kids with suspected dairy allergy/ intolerance and other digestive issues.

A 7 week old is very little and I remember how important it was to see baby thrive. I would give it a go for a month and keep an eye on how much weight baby is putting on.

I do recommend trying this as our daughter was a very grumpy baby and I do wonder how much of that was down to her feeling uncomfortable.

She is now nearly 9 and thriving!

It will definitely provide all of the nutritional that your LO needs. All formulas in the UK have to adhere to some pretty strict nutritional guidelines so don't worry about that.

Is baby anymore settled on the new milk?

It really does smell horrible. @DoneByWeds thanks for your insight. Yeah because only 7 weeks I’m worried it will affect weight gain? Because he been doing really well gaining weight, the doctor said trial it and I questioned Cmpa but doctor said but baby gaining really good weight from just regular formula milk I’m not sure if if Cmpa can you gain really good weight on regular formula or not? But Gp said trial the alfamino milk. I’m just worried he will not thrive on it

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto thanks that’s abit more reassuring as that’s what I was worried about the nutritional factor. Baby just switched to it so I’m waiting to see if there is a difference x

It is normal to be concerned. I was. Living with an allergy is second nature to us now and my daughter handles it really well. You can find support in various places - a Facebook group called "CMPA support group" was really good for us.

The only way really is to give it a go and see if it impacts his weight gain, however he will be getting all the nutrients he needs if he is feeding normally.

From the allergy communities we have been in, we hear it can be a bit of trial and error to get to a CMPA allergy diagnosis as there can different ways that the body reacts.

This is a great source of info
allergyuk.org/

One of our friends found that their GP said the same as yours, cant be a CMPA if they are gaining weight. However that wasn't the case for them and they saw an improvement after excluding dairy over about 2 weeks.

It was different for us as our daughter is allergic to all dairy instantly. First time I fed her yoghurt we had a blue light trip to hospital as her lips swelled up. It was really clear what she was allergic to - don't let this worry you - it us unlike your situation.

Good luck with the stinky stuff! It can make the world of difference.

@DoneByWeds thanks for this about the nutrition. It says on this alfamino formula 150ml is the recommended amount for my baby age, but he’s taking a long time to drink 100ml he isn’t managing the whole 150ml , his regular formula was 100-110ml so he seems to still be drinking to that same amount but instead of taking 20-30 minutes he’s taking an hour to feed.

thanks for the link I will check it out x

ah I see so your baby really did have a serious dairy allergy x

Hi Lou, how did you get on with this after? We also have suspected cmpa baby but struggling with the formula thinness

My daughter needed gaviscon in alfamino because it triggered her reflux otherwise. She was also on reflux meds as she had problematic reflux before starting on alfamino

We got on absolutely fine I took baby off it as he hated it and I didn’t think he had a true allergy we switched to Hipp organic and he was absolutely fine with it. Obviously if the child thrives on this it’s different for each child but my baby just did no good on it. After 6 months there was no colic either I think he just developed. Now he is fully weaned x
