9 week old feeding & sleeping routine

I’m concerned about my 9 week old’s sleep routine and would like some advice. He is mixed breast and bottle fed (2 bottles a day, one around midday and one late at night with breastfeeding in between). He mostly only sleeps very small amounts during the day - on average he has 2x 30 minute naps between 7/8am and 7/8pm with periods of up to 5 hours of awake time in one go, often crying for extended periods of time with no apparent reason (I’m sure there is a reason, but I have no idea what it is!). He used to always have a 3 hour sleep usually between 7pm ish and 10pm ish, but that has become more fragmented now with him waking up every 30 minutes to 1 hour and needing to be settled back down. After that, he is awake roughly every 40 minutes to 1 hour all night. In the night he usually falls back asleep quickly after a feed and a nappy change, but he never manages to connect sleep cycles and always needs to be soothed in between.

is this normal? I can’t help thinking there is something wrong and my baby is unhappy or in pain or something. Everywhere online says that babies of his age should only be awake 2 hours at a time and should sleep around 14 hours a day which is definitely not the case with my son, which makes me worry for his health and development. I would appreciate any advice, thank you.

(I am no expert and literally winging it with my 8 week old!) He sounds overtired? The crying for hours with no apparent reason (once anything medical has been ruled out) sounds a lot like how mine is in the evenings after a couple of cat naps late afternoon/evenings.
Is there anything that'll make him sleep longer? being in the pram out walking, or in the car? when my first got overtired I'd do anything needed to get a good few naps in for a couple of days to try and break the cycle of overtiredness leading to shit short sleeps, leading to overtiredness and that'd help other areas.

@Isabellamt my baby is a similar age and also has five hour wake windows - he sounds very similar to yours! I wonder how you had got on over the past year or so… how is he now? Did anything help? Smile

@Seeky4 Hi! I’ll be honest, this difficult phase only lasted a couple of weeks, it was so tough at the time but since then he has slowly but surely grown into a good sleeper touch wood! He now sleeps 12-13 hours straight a night. The only advice I can really offer is to give your little one the time they need to find their own routine, in my experience they will work it out for themselves sooner or later! Lots of love you you ❤️
