Should you diet when breastfeeding?

DS is 14 weeks old and on 98th centile. REALLY enjoying him/feeding him/life in general but am so pissed off am still a lardy lump. Am two stone heavier than pre-preg. Is it really bad to diet when bfing and will it affect milk supply if I do? Was thinking of a non-extreme low-carb diet (such as the no-carbs-after-5pm diet). Or will this weight miraculously disappear (oh, please....!) Thanks, Dinny.

How long does it take to lose about two stone? 12 weeks? I'm back to gym in the NY as ds can go in creche (was avid gym-goer pre-preg). I've been treating myself far too much. Just can't seem to focus on not eating "treats". Keep conveniently "forgetting"/ Sounds thick, but if I don't eat treat-type foods but three healthy meals and fruit as snacks will I honestly lose weight I am in mind-set where you have to eat literally nothing to lose weight....

honey, if you are still BF, and you can get to the gym 2 or 3 times a week, and stick to mealtimes only with fruit in between, you will definitely shift the weight. What you need is a good start to get going, then you'll feel encouraged and keep at it.

Not the best time of year to be fretting about weight, I know, but make a new year's resolution. You wil enjoy the chance to have a bit of time alone at the gym, even if it is spent on the stairmaster. And it's good to get your baby used to the creche - with ds I waited till he was 10 months and it was a bit of a problem. With DD I started at 3 months and she's fine. It's only for an hour, I shower at home afterwards, and although I hate the gym, I feel so much better after I've been. I'm a very food-focused (read: greedy) person, and exercise is the only way I can indulge.

IME, the hardest bit is getting started on a new health and eating regime - once you're on it, there'll be no looking back.

Thanks, Lulupops - have got off to good start by having tummy bug, so it's back to the gym properly next week. Can't wait to wear my nice clothes again - wish me luck!

tummy bugs are great! obviously not while you have them, but it's always nice to find you've lost half a stone without even trying!

feeling rather lardy myself at the mo and planning a new yr onslaught at the gym

To all on weight watchers - how did you manage it? I've just been to their online site and they specifically forbid bf women from joining the at home pack. Did you go to meetings?

I've lost weight with ww before and found it really suits me, want to go back on it but am still bf dd 3 times per day. Can't go to meetings as all the local ones are at the wrong time for me.

I tried weightwatchers while breast feeding and could not shift any weight at all! IME trying to eat heathily and take exercise is best when bfeeding and then go for the diet when you've finished. I've lost 24lbs since I stopped feeding DS2 (4 months ago) - counting weight watchers points but not going to any meetings

24lbs in 4 months? That's fab - congratulations hope to follow in your footsteps!

Good luck!
Although I think I have put most of it back on over Christmas
