6 month old vomited now refusing feeds, hand hold please

Just looking for a hand hold. Have called 111 and then the surgery and have been advised to call again this afternoon if she hasn’t fed by then.

dd had a restless night, not unusual, then vomited first feed of the day and has since then refused to feed and just tries to sleep but is clearly uncomfortable (wakes every 30 mins on the dot, cries, refuses to feed, goes back to sleep within minutes).

for context, I came down with what I thought was food poisoning on Tuesday night. I was very unwell with fever and d/v for 24 hours, then much improved yesterday, fine today. I kept breastfeeding but was very careful with hand washing etc. perhaps not careful enough.

I wish she would accept a feed, then I think I’d stop worrying. The last one she kept down was at about midnight. PFB if now obvious.

12 hours of not taking a feed is too long to wait, I would take her to a doctor right away.

We had a similar situation when my ds was 9 months old; the doctor at the hospital asked why we’d waited so long to bring him in and said it’s very hard for anyone advising over the phone to judge the situation.

It's always a worry when they're poorly but something you'll have to get used to I'm afraid. Just offer regular feeds abs keep an eye on nappies - if no wet ones then seek medical advice but otherwise just keep them as comfy as possible and it'll pass soon x

freesiasandpeonies · 10/11/2023 12:04

Am not trying to be alarmist but my ds was still having wet nappies. He was feeding, throwing up 20 minutes later (so I assumed he’d had some of it at least) and his nappies were wet. He had a particularly nasty bug (as per the hospital test results) so perhaps it was an unusually bad case.

He was my second so not my pfb and I often found it hard to make judgment calls because people were always telling me to calm down/relax. With hindsight I personally wouldn’t take any chances with dehydration.

Good luck and I hope your daughter gets better soon! (And poor you for having had food poisoning)

Rooandtwo · 10/11/2023 12:50

thanks all. She finally woke up not crying about an hour ago and 20 mins ago she took a feed for ten minutes before we stopped because she seemed unsure if she could keep it down. She’s gone back to sleep.

this thread just shows how hard it is to make these calls. I do fluctuate between feeling too worried or not worried enough.

the doctor I spoke with said at 24 hours she would need a drip if not having fed so to call back at 2 if she hadn’t fed and she has (assuming she keeps it down). I think for now im going to continue to monitor what she’s able to have and keep down, wet nappies etc. but also how she is when she wakes. So far she’s been alert, not lively but curious and a little chatty. That makes me feel she’s ok so far.

so I’ll continue offering feeds and being nap trapped, praying tonight’s sleep isn’t shot by so much day napping, and try to find something better to watch than the Robbie Williams thing on Netflix.

@freesiasandpeonies I’m now less sure it was food poisoning?! I can’t seem to find anything categoric about if food poisoning can become contagious in some cases, or if something like Noravirus can be over with in 24-48 hours. Also, we’re not that social a pair so a bit stumped where we could have caught it.

Odd - must have been some rogue sort of bug.

Pleased to hear your daughter had a proper feed, hopefully she’s on the mend already 🌻

summerisnearlyhere · 10/11/2023 13:14

My daughter had similar when she was a baby, she was admitted to hospital, but we were told to offer 5ml of cooled boiled water every 5 minutes, or a calpol syringe if easier, if anything similar happened again. The amount is so small it should stay down, but regular enough to keep hydrated.
Hope she feels better soon

goababy · 10/11/2023 13:15

We had this a couple of weeks ago, believe it was gastro. Called local GP and they were worried about dehydration (can happen very fast for babies) so said to go straight to kids A&E.

Hospital will do a fluid challenge to assess how much fluid is staying in. Luckily for us DD managed to feed and keep it down once at hospital.

Always better to go and not be necessary than risk baby being dehydrated!

Fleur405 · 10/11/2023 13:18

I’m a bit surprised they said 24 hours. The concern is dehydration. Try offering some cooked boiled water (you can also add some of the unflavoured dioralyte) and monitor wet nappies carefully (we were prescribed this for our baby so I understand it is fine for babies but do check the labelling/ with a pharmacist)

Yes it can be. But it's much less common. Most food poisoning is campylobacter which can go person to person but that is relatively rare.

Equally, norovirus can be over in 24-48 hours.

Or it's just some unspecified bug.

Rooandtwo · 10/11/2023 13:32

I feel I should add to this thread that the GP I spoke with is one I actually have a bit of a problem with. So if anyone should read this in the future, don’t let the advice I’ve been given affect what other information you have and obviously seek your own advice. As I said above I was looking for a hand hold and to hear from others who had similar experience, but not for medical advice.

happy to report baby is now feeding again having kept the last lot down. Though still very drowsy.

Ive never actually had a stomach bug before, only food poisoning (confirmed) and sun stroke. Otherwise I’ve been very lucky or have a strong stomach. I expect parenthood is about to bring that to a swift end 🤔
