Hello

my 1 year old has eczema which seems a bit better from using 50/50 emollient - would recommend it! skin feels much softer. Just thought i would recommend this product.

when i feed my one year old in bed at night he starts scratching his head/scalp really badly. last night we were up most of the night with him scratching his head. I have special shampoo for his scalp and have antihistamine for night time but does not make any difference.

Could he be allergic to my milk all of a sudden?

He has had a bit of a cold and has a 5-10 red pimples/spots on his body . not sure what this is. it is not eczema and he seems ok during day time. thank you

I'm not sure, just bumping for you!

My DS is allergic to dairy and eggs and he used to scream while feeding when he was little. he also used to really scratch his head at night. I think when they are falling asleep they are not distracted from the itching so much so they scratch more.

I know you can develop allergies at any point so it is possible.

could he be coming down with something like measles or chickenpox?

I wouldn't have thought that it was your breastmilk tbh. unless you've been eating something different to him and it's causing a reaction?

I don't reallyh ave much experience of babies with eczema but it does tend to be worse at night anyway doesn't it?

could he be reacting to washing powder or house dust mite or something else on the bedding itself?

Hi Foxy1

My DD is 18m now, has eczema and is still BF Morning and Night.

Unless you have radically changed your diet I doubt it is the BM.

You need to ask yourself some questions:

What does he eat now that he did not eat 1 month ago? Allergies can take a while to show up.

What are you washing his clothes and yours in? Have you changed anything. I have stopped using fabric softener and it has really helped.

Has he had a rash after a cold before? DD has a rash after every cold - I think it is all part of the virus, it makes her itch even more.

Outbreaks can also be random and caused by things you don't even know they have been in contact with. We are dealing with one atm and it is baffling I have had eczema all my life so I know the routine a bit - DP gets really freaked out though

Can I also suggest you buy some Organic Porridge Oats and try putting some in a muslin in a cool bath. Wash him with the creamy liquid that comes out instead of the usual bath oil. It has worked wonders on DD.

Also - the Summer is nearly here and I find that the warm weather (not too hot!) and no central heating really helps.

HTH

That sounds like great advice. My LO was exactly the same as trixy's - allergic to dairy which he was getting loads of through my milk! But this was from when he was born, don't know if you can suddenly develop a reaction like that from BM if you've done it for a year?

Sorry, no help!

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/03/2008 21:38

It sounds like he has chickenpox!

Take him to GP in the morning.

foxy1 · 10/03/2008 21:45

it has got worse since he was weaned. so is it food related. should i try a different shampoo maybe aloe vera soothing for scalp?

The spots on his body and the itchy head. Dd had CP at the start of this year and her head was the worst affected area.

If it is longer term then it is quite possibly a dairy allergy. Could you not offer any dairy containing foods for a couple of weeks (it takes this long to clear from the system) and limit your own dairy intake, and see if it improves?

callmeovercautious · 10/03/2008 23:37

What shampoo are you using now foxy?

I agree you need to check out the Chickenpox thing so take him to the GP.

cazee · 11/03/2008 09:07

I asgree with CantSleepWontSleep, it does sound like a dairy allergy or intollerance. To check you need to cut out all dairy completely from his and your diet for at least 3 weeks.
Eek, stairgate open, have to chase baby

using special capasil shampoo from doctor but think it is too harsh. spots seems to have faded a bit. will try cut out dairy for few weeks -(i will miss my mature cheddar cheese!! )
