my 5 week old breastfed dd has had green poo for the past few days. i have always thought that it should be a yellow colour which it was. is this normal.

could she be teething? dd always had green poo when teething, and occasionally at other times too. I thought it might be something I ate but never managed to work out what.

dont think it culd be that. she is only 5 weeks. then again i dont really have a clue

does she have rosy cheeks and/or more dribble than usual?

PhDlifeNeedsaNewLife · 10/03/2008 21:20

pud - it can go green if she's a little dehydrated (eg if it's hot). Or teething (though 5 weeks is a bit early!) Or sometimes it just does go green, usually only for a couple of days.

However, IF she is showing any other sign of illness, such as a fever, you need to get her looked at.

hth, sure a proper bfc will be along shortly.

Mine had it at about this age. Health visitor said it was nothing to worry about and it went back to yellow after a few days.

LyraSilvertongue · 10/03/2008 21:21

5 weeks it a bit young to be teething.

mollymawk · 10/03/2008 21:23

I am not a proper bfc but my DS1 had this and it was to do with a very rapid let-down at the beginning of each feed so he got a lot of the watery milk at the beginning (I think). I think it just wore off in the end.

SenoraPostrophe · 10/03/2008 21:24

some babies have teeth at 5 weeks!

SenoraPostrophe · 10/03/2008 21:24

also don't know about let-down, but not getting enough hind milk might cause it I guess. it was a long time ago (17 months since ds2 was 5 weeks!)

pud1 · 10/03/2008 21:29

thanks all,

she has no other sort of symptoms. i will keep my eye on it over the next few days. hv coming tomorrow so will speak to her

pud, DD was like this and it was a result of my super fast let down and a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, but it took me a while to suss that out. There are other reasons though, like diahorrea, teething as mentioned.

Talk to your HV and/or Breast feeding counsellor

In the meantime, there is lots of troubleshooting information on Kellymom. It's a fab website

christianmum · 10/03/2008 21:42

You could try offering one side for a 3-4 hour period and then swap, this way they get more hind milk, it worked with all 3 of mine and a couple of friends.

pud1 · 10/03/2008 21:43

just been looking on kellymom. has answered lots of questions. think it will be a great help

kellymom is good, but you can also visit hunkermunker's blog, howbreastfeedingworks (dot com? dot org? can't remember, but google the long name, you'll find it). HunkerMunker and tiktok are bfc/mners and they are marvellous!

good luck pud
