Need to stop breastfeeding, how to stop cold turkey with a bottle refuser?

Two massively sore blood drawn bitten nipples are done! I'm done. It hurts and I'm done! 9 month old hates a bottle, loves his food but still boobs 3 times a day and up to 4 times a night. I'm fucked aren't I? I can't do it anymore though!

Can he go straight onto a baby cup with a spout?
I know it sounds “old fashioned” but my mum took me off the breast and straight into a proper cup! Must have worked ok but I’m not advocating it.

You can't go cold turkey you have to stop it gradually

NmeChngeFail · 31/10/2023 10:04

Can they stay at someone's house for a few days?

CacenDiolch · 31/10/2023 10:04

He won't stop biting and my nipples are wrecked I genuinely can't take much more.

Of course you can go cold turkey. It's not easy for either you or the baby but it's doable. You'll get swollen and uncomfortable breasts for a few days. Baby will get upset but will eventually accept other fluids. At 9 months they're eating solids, you can introduce more fluids in their food, offer things like yogurt, veg with high liquid content and milk as appropriate in a sippy cup, it can be cows milk at that age I think

OP you can go cold turkey of course but wary of the sudden hormone drop and how that might impact your mood. I had to stop suddenly due to illness, and it plunged me into a mild depression for a while, as my body and brain didn't have the time to adjust to the hormone change.
I think if I knew it was coming it would have been easier.
I agree with going straight to a sippee cup if you can.

When my babies bit, I took them straight off the boob, put them down somewhere safe (usually on the floor at home) and walked away from them. They did learn not to bite fairly soon.

Yes you can stop cold turkey, you can just hand express. At 9 months I would just offer a sippy cup and plenty food/snacks.
easier said than done though, I know.

Yes as long as you hand express but still got to be careful

Do you have HomeStart in your area? They offer breastfeeding support and should be able to help you stop in a way that reduces the risk of mastitis. Alternatively you could ring a breastfeeding support phone line. Mastitis is horrendous and a real risk if you stop feeding cold turkey when your baby is feeding quite a few times in 24 hours.

Pertangyangkipperbang · 31/10/2023 10:21

My daughter was two when l stopped and went cold Turkey.. my Mum had her sleep over for two nights.. she just had water from a sippy cup ( and her food) . Never asked for boob after that.

Mine were formula fed but at 9 months they both went on milk strike refused all bottles except 1 before bed. With DD1 the paediatrician (in the US where it’s normal to see one for primary care) said it was absolutely fine, some babies wean faster than others and to give vitamin drops plus a healthy balanced diet, 3 meals a day plus 2 snacks, with plenty of dairy eg cereal with milk, yoghurt, cheese and not to worry. And water to drink from a sippy cup of course.

So if baby loves his food I’d introduce vitamins and not worry, you could also use formula in porridge etc if you wanted to (although I never did). The only thing to rethink maybe is whether going completely cold turkey is the best thing for your health.

I went cold Turkey with my first, he was 7 months and was absolutely fine.

Will he take a cup OP? Could you use nipple shields?
