Hello My daughter is 6 weeks old and was small for dates and only weighed in at 4lb 6oz even though she was full term and we spent 3 weeks in special care as she wouldn't feed properly.

She is now 6lb 2oz and bottle fed. She has had colic since she was 3 weeks and i am using infacol and dr browns bottles which appeared to help in the first instance but the last 3 days have been a nightmare!!

She now refuses to get any wind up sometimes none at all during the feed even though we keep stopping constantly and it can take over 40 mins finish 70 mls. Because of the wind she is not taking full feeds and wanting to feed more frequently but when it comes to the next feed she still has wind from the previous one.

Oh and did i mention she is screaming!!!!!

Oh you poor think - been there with my DD and it is hell.

Gripe Water - tastes horrid but seems to help

Cranial Oestopath - was the only thing that really helped my DD, obviously you won't be able to get an appointment now but try tomorrow.

Get into a warm bath with her and feed her in that - seemed to relax our DD - didn't cure it but made it a bit better.

Try holding DD close to you with her arms up over your neck - I think it straightens everything out inside and allows the air to escape.

Do you have one of those baby bouncers - soft chairs - ours was a cheepy from Mothercare and DD slept in her for the first few months as it kept her at a raised angle which seemed to help.

Will think of other things we tried, It does pass I promise even though it feels like hell

Smurfs · 09/03/2008 21:11

We also used to hold DD close and gently rub up the left side of her back - something to do with the alignment of the stomach if I recall correctly

With the cranial oestopath - we had 1 session and the manipulations were so tiny DD loved it and she then proceeded to spend a couple of hours trumping and burping and after that she was a completly different baby.

Remember it is always worse in the late afternoon early evening do you have somebody who can help so you take it in turns?

easydoesit · 09/03/2008 21:24

definitly gripe water worth a try but have you tried colief? wonderful stuff. It's 10 quid but really does the trick. if it works for you go to your GP they can prescribe it for free (but are often reluctant to unless you've tried it). DD would never let us wind her until she had finished her bottle, she still has colief and gripe water in her bottle at 11 months, some babies are just windy i do sympathise! We've worked out that putting your thumb on one side of her back and your forefinger on the other in a V and moving them up really gets the wind up well with your other hand supporting their chest/chin. hope that makes sense and helps!

dd had dreadful colic, never seemed to stop screaming, used ifacol ect but the only thing that helped us was going to a Cranial Oestopath. when somebody told us about the osteopath we thought it was a load of rubbish, and when we went to see her it looked like she didnt do anything but the change was huge, we only had to go twice and the colic went - i would recomend it to everyone.

Ledodgy · 09/03/2008 21:30

What formula are you using? We found SMA was a nightmare for wind. Ds2 is now on Aptimil Easy digest and this has been fab he is so settled and I wish i'd known about it for my other two.

isaidno · 09/03/2008 21:33

Another recommendation for gripe water here - much more effective than infacol.

pukkapatch · 09/03/2008 21:34

baby massage helps sometimes. rotate your hand clockwise on her tummy. sometimes helps

pukkapatch · 09/03/2008 21:35

i thought infacol fecking useless waste of money.
if nothing helps, get something from homeopathic doctor. but not just pick up yoursefl from boots iyswim

lilyloo · 09/03/2008 21:36

cranial osteopath
colief
gripe water
driving in car
carried in sling
baby massage , using side of your thumb do small circles round belly button
lie lo across your arm/ knee and rub back sometimes wind comes up easier when they are held vertically
Walks in the pram

My greatest sympathys it does pass ds had terrible colic and he was 3 months when he stopped screaming.

For you , get out and about and attend any baby classes on offer. It is very stressful being with a screaming baby and getting out can help a lot.

My dd2 is 7 weeks and we also have some screaming days where nothing works but i hold on to the thought it will pass!

newatthis1981 · 09/03/2008 22:52

Thanks everyone feel a bit better but then again she is asleep!!!

We have tried colief for a week before infacol and that had no effect

She is on cow & gate low birth weight formula otherwise i would change but with her being so small it has been prescribed

We do alot of baby massage but that just seems to anger her at the mo

Will try Gripe water but can i give her that with infacol?

Now crainial Osteopath - How do i find one and how do i know they aren't just a work experience student or monkey in a white coat etc?????

And will it hurt her coz she is tiny and i have chiropractor visions!

Cranial Oestopath - wherabouts are you?

How about a new thread asking for one in your area?

No it does not hurt them the 'manipulations' are so tiny that it is impossible to see them to be honest. When our DD had it it looked like she was just being moved ever so gently from side to side. Not cheap but worth it I think ours was £60 nearly 3 years ago.

newatthis1981 · 09/03/2008 23:37

Yeah i shall do that i'm in newcastle

I'll ring my GP in the morning to see if they have a list of practitioners

Its so awful seeing her in pain and so disconcerting to only have a child thats contented for around 1 hour per day i feel like i'm doing something wrong - i know i'm not but its just so frustrating!

Thanks for all your help

newatthis, is there any chance you might think about relactating? If your baby seems to be unhappy with formula, then it might be an option - not an easy one, admittedly, though if it is only s little while since you stopped breastfeeding, it would not be so hard.

Anyway, ask if you want to know more

Smurfs · 10/03/2008 09:28

newatthis1981 - hope you managed some sleep and your little one is a little more settled. I will have a look for you and see if there is a Oestopaths Governing Body which could suggest one in Newcastle.

tittok - out of interest how long after you stop breastfeeding would you be able to re-start in general terms I know everybody is different! I only managed 5 days with DD as she wouldn't feed and the counsellor I spoke to were dreadful - she said she would call me back as it was tea time DD was a big baby - 9lb 3ozs, even though a week early so we went on to formula v.quikly. I did what was best at the time but have often wondered if it could have been different. Academic now as DD is 2.5 {sorry for hijack nat)

tiktok · 10/03/2008 09:35

smurfs - there's no real ceiling on relactation, and there are individual instances of mothers bringing back milk ages and ages after they stopped. However, the sooner you start working on it, the more quickly it returns.

If you had had the right help, then you may have turned things round.

Sorry the counsellor didn't call you back. But we are volunteers, at home, and if people call us at a time we can't give them proper attention, then we have to offer to call back...I don't understand what's wrong with that!

Of course if she didn't call back, that's bad - she might have lost your number, which is careless but human! You could have called her of course

Smurfs · 10/03/2008 09:35

nat1981 - try the link below and ask others on here if they have used them. Hope it is sorted soon.

www.findanosteopath.co.uk/osteopath_in.asp?loc=Newcastle%20Upon%20tyne

Smurfs · 10/03/2008 09:43

tittok - thanks for that, sadly I never did get a call back but all academic now. Not sure why I didn't call them back though....most unlike me not to persist

I phoned various helplines in such a panic but the best advice I got was Savoy cabbage, and it was the height of summer and I was starting to smell like an old school dinner

What I should have done is marched back down to the hospital, got 1 person to show me how to do it properly and stayed until it worked ( I did feed DS for nearly 4 months so I could have done it) Benefit of hindsight I think

If I have any more DC I will contact you

Just remember- stay calm- every baby does wind.

Try to make sure she is upright, stomach not folded or squished, and be patient.

baby massage, two hands, sunrise (9 to 3) clockwise with two fingersof right had, then 3 to 9 with left hand

Hello Thanks you for all your responses.

I have just got back from my second session with the Crainial Osteopath and she is fantastic.

Since first session it was like i had a different baby she is so much more relaxed and although still cries with wind every now and again these instances are few and far between and what i would consider 'normal' windy pains.

I also bought a fisher price rainforest Chair which she totally loves so between the two things i now have a smiley baby as a posed to a troll baby

Thanks so much for your help
