Tongue-tie - your experiences please?

After nearly ten weeks of constant pain and misery, I discovered on Friday that DD is tongue-tied. I've begun reading up on it and the BF counsellor is making a referral for the procedure to resolve this, but I'd really like to hear from other mothers whose babies have been affected by this.

Thank you.

here is another wierd bit of info about TT. (didn't know it was inherited from the male side)

When her dd2 was about 6 or 8 months, she noticed that her Labia minora (minorae?) hadn't separated - and neither had any HCP when she was checked over at birth. When she took her to the GP or however have a look, they prescribed an oestrogen cream which she applied and they then separated on their own. Apparently this condition is connected to TT.

Her dd3 was later diagnosed with tongue tie after no one noticed until after 4 mos and was by then bullied into ff by the HV for slow weight gain. (her dd remained on the same %-ile on as a formula fed baby)

Now I'll go off wondering if a restrictive foreskin may not also be similar in origin...

flea - hope you're hanging in there. nearly thursday! I have gone back to nearly all the health professionals (mw & hv) who either said "oh I'm sure he doesn't have tongue tie" (without even checking) or "don't worry as long as he's gaining weight" to tell them what a difference it made. none seemed ready to be very convinced

didn't know TT was inherited from male side... interesting

I never knew it was from the male side.
My Ds is tongue tied, and his dad has gone on to have 2 Dds with another partner and they are tongue tied too.

I now have a Dd with a different partner and she is tongue tied. I must attract tongue tie carriers!!

Hi guys,

My DS got his tongue tie sorted today! I called the bf counsellor and it looked as though the appointment at King's wasn't going to happen tomorrow! There was no way I was waiting another week. In the telegraph article, the baby friendly initiative was mentioned in the comments and I found this:

Locations where tongue tie can be sorted

I called all the london hospitals and the consultant at St George's Hospital agreed to see me this afternoon if I could get there and tat my bf counsellor would fax over the referral. I got a (very expensive) cab ride there, got saw last but it doesn't matter cos my DS is no longer TT!

Please push for this if it's really important to you. I know if i waited another week, I would have given up bf! We came home, had some skin to skin and DS bf comfortably and went to sleep with no crying or top ups! Fingers crossed this is a sign of things to come!

Ax

oh honey my son was tongue tied , I had a horrendous time feeding, he got it snipped at 7 weeks and feeding became much better phew!

fleasterbunnycircus · 19/03/2008 18:58

Due to have the snip tomorrow. Slightly dreading it for DD but also so relieved finally to know that something is being done. And can't wait to find out what breastfeeding is like without the pain!

mumofdjandpandbump · 19/03/2008 19:57

hoesntly its ok

DJ was 7 weeks and there was literally no blood, they snip it a wee bit, let the baby cry and it tears naturally a bit more (heals better).

he was happy as larry 2 , yes 2 mins after

let us know how you get on

MamaChris · 19/03/2008 20:16

great news flea - don't worry at all about the snip. My ds was one of the rare babies who bleed a bit (most don't at all), but obviously felt no pain as he was looking around very happy as soon as it was done, and before the bleeding stopped. the staff at the RF are lovely and will take great care of your dd.

fleasterbunnycircus · 21/03/2008 15:50

Thank you all of you for sharing your stories and for your reassurance. DD had her snip yesterday. The staff at the Royal Free were fantastic and DD was completely unbothered by it - in fact she seemed to be having a fun day out. Straight away I noticed a different sound when she was feeding, much less clicking and gulping, and today it's beginning to feel different. The nipple is still very sore and I guess will take a while to heal but things are definitely improving at last. I'm so relieved and so glad finally we found a solution to all the problems - now I can't wait to experience breastfeeding without the pain!
