How many feeds per day does a 1+ year old need?

I ask because my ds is coming up for a year; I work full time and express during the day (only about three ounces but it's nice to know he's having a bit of my milk while I'm away).

He also grazes all night long (co sleeping) and bfs morning, late afternoon and evening in addition to everything else.

However, I only have this fabby pump on loan until April (when he's a year) and would quite like to cease expressing after that.

Trouble is... I'm working in a low-paid stress free job atm which suits me well with the constant night feeding; trouble is I'd like soon to up the ante a bit and go back into a higher paid (and more stressed) job.

So at some point soon I'd also like to night wean, or at least cut down on the night wakings.

And I want to know, will ds be getting enough bm if I only feed morning, late afternoon, evening and maybe just once at night, and don't express any milk for him during the day?

And also, how will my supply keep up for the weekends when I'm not working?

I love the Sears books and website, they are great. My ds2 is 14 months now and similar to yours. He'll ill at the moment (as am I) and feeds a lot more, he's been grazing most of the morning so far and lots at night too.

Sears put things in perspective as well.

dr jay gordeon on sleep and BF

That is interesting about being able to night wean but still co-sleep, I like that idea, thank you, I will wait a little longer I think but will try that in a month or so when he's a year or older.

Re: the number of feeds / amount of milk, does anyone know an answer to that i.e. will three or four bfs be enough for him when he is a year?

that many feeds will be enough for him nutritionally but you may have to accept that it will be the beginning of cutting down over all IME

At this age with DS2, I was only feeding him morning , mid afternoon and before bed (and night if he woke) although I am currently feeding DS3 (12m) about 5 times a day and whenever he wants at night

I might have a look at that link too as I would quite like to cut down a bit but am feelding a bit emotional about it as he will be my last

Hmm... think that is one of the things I am scared of, that he will want to stop all together.

How do you combine working ft with "extended" bf (i.e. full term bf)?

I am still b/f my 15 month old - and work p/time. He has a feed am and pm and on the odd occassion middle of the night . The days when I'm not at work I feed him afternoon too. This week I worked full time but I didn't express. Our bodies are amazing things in adjusting - I have stayed away over night and not expressed and it has been fine.

with first two they were just on morning and night feeds (plus odd night wakenings) from 12-13 mths feeding tailed off when I played no more night feed card at 16 mths. Both much preferred a cup at daytime. Am intending to keep the relationship going with ds2 as he is my last... But I don't have to work. Dunno how you do it with night waking
