CMPA Formula Ice Cream

HowDoYouDoAnything · 11/10/2023 19:13

Looking for advice from any one who has tried it.

My mums partner is big into making his own ice creams. He's done hundreds of different flavours now and it's a big hobby of his.

As of January DS will be going to their house 2 days a week instead of nursery and they can't wait. Very exited.

Right now DS (5 months) has CMPA and is 50% breast milk and 50% SMA Althera fed.

Mum's partner would like to know if he can make DS a special batch of ice cream using his formula. But because of what it is and how ice cream sets and such we have no idea if it will work and set properly.

Any ideas? Any one tried it?

We know we can try oat milk or coconut milk ice cream eventually but the question about his formula got raised and now we are genuinely curious.

I'm not sure many 8m olds get given ice cream so can't imagine many people have made it with formula?

HowDoYouDoAnything · 11/10/2023 19:28

Yeah but it's not like they must stop drinking formula at 1 or something.

There must be somone who has an 18 month old or similar who has tried it.

They won't be making ice cream from day 1. For a start it will be January and freezing cold out. They planning ahead for next summer.

Like I said, the conversation came up (rather than a direct plan was being formed) which led to questions that none of us knew the answer to so I just wondered if anyone had tried it.

Mine had frozen breast milk “Lolly” sticks when they were teething (both cut teeth before 6 months) so I can’t imagine it’s that much different? And when they were weaning adding banana was an easy win too! So I presume it’s possible.

jollyjeffrey · 11/10/2023 21:36

But most babies do move away from formula at 12m - it's so much cheaper and easier to give cow's milk so that's what most people do.

I'm not criticising, just flagging that people who have tried it might be few and far between.

OublietteBravo · 11/10/2023 22:23

I googled the ingredients in the formula. I think the melting point of the fat blend would be too high, and it wouldn’t aerate properly.

eurochick · 12/10/2023 09:56

What about coconut milk ice cream?

NannyR · 12/10/2023 10:01

I would look into different dairy free alternatives like fruit sorbets, coconut based ice creams.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 12/10/2023 10:05

You can put breastmilk in an ice cream maker. Or coconut milk works well (but tastes coconutty). You'd be best finding a nice dairy free ice cream recipe; at this age they can try all sorts but coconut milk would be your best bet. I wouldn't use CMPA formula as it won't "cream" properly so the consistency won't be great.
Also look for a recipe that's relatively low sugar.
One recipe that's really easy (and low in refined sugar) is banana lollies and they're banana so great for LOs. Chocolate Covered Katie has loads of dairy free recipes that might suit you: https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/banana-ice-cream-healthy/

Q Why does a five month old need to be eating icecream?

A They don’t.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 12/10/2023 10:07

That link above is her banana lolly recipes which are 99% banana. They don't require an ice cream maker. Here are her other dairy free ice cream recipes, which you could do in an ice cream maker: https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/?s=ice+cream

Oh shit I totally misread the OP and thought LO was 8 months old!!! Save my recipe suggestions for when LO is a bit bigger OP!

Ostryga · 12/10/2023 10:09

Babies don’t need ice cream. Just wait till he’s older and give him dairy-free ice cream, or made with dairy free cream and eggs.

NannyR · 12/10/2023 10:15

Frozen bananas blended till they are smooth makes a surprisingly delicious ice cream.

@viques

We were having a hypothetical discussion.

Originally the conversation was him making me some dairy free ice cream (coconut or similar), and DS was having a bottle whilst we talked and a joke got made about using his formula to make some.
This led to "would that even work? Normally there is a cream aspect that makes it set. I've had plenty of ice cream failures that just stayed mush so I don't know"

We aren't actually feeding ice cream to a baby here.

Just trying to figure out if it would work.

@NannyR We don't actually want to give him ice cream, formula or banana. We just trying to understand the science of his formula and how it works.

Fair enough, but your original post said your mums partner wanted to make him a special batch of ice cream using his formula.
If you want to find out about how the formula behaves when frozen, why not just try freezing some.

We know it will freeze solid like an ice lolly (we did give him some of that frozen in a dummy when he was teething) just like breast milk or regular milk will freeze solid.
We were more thinking about the ice cream texture.
He made a bad batch a while back where he asked too much or not enough (I'm not the ice cream expert and they have gone home now so I can't ask which) of some bits and it refused to become ice cream and mix. It ended up with a solid frozen edge surrounding a puddle.

But we don't know what element of ice cream makes it texture properly or if the formula has it.

My son had ice-cream at 5 months

OublietteBravo · 12/10/2023 14:33

Ice cream texture is really a combination of fat structuring, and ice control. If you want to know more, then The Science of Ice Cream by Chris Clarke is very accessible.

Devilsmommy · 13/10/2023 11:01

If you were giving it after 6 months then I'd just use the oat or coconut milk. Though if oat use the toddler one. They're allowed it on cereal at 6mo so don't see why Ice cream would be a problem. Interesting as my little one has soya so thanks for the thread
