Wind and hiccups, infacol making worse?

Hello

i have a two week old who since my milk came in has been suffering with trapped wind and gets hiccups when feeding that often last half an hour at least. The hiccups and wind keep him awake which means he’s often overtired. The midwives and health visitor just put it down to his digestive system needing to mature and said it’s normal however the last day or two have been really tough and he has been crying whilst feeding and arching his back (EBF). It makes getting him to sleep during the day a challenge and the only time he settles is in the carrier.

after feeding he’ll pump his arms and legs in discomfort and all we can do is try to wind him.

he’s just also started being very congested especially at night so we’ve bought a humidifier that seems to help a little

We burp and wind him during/after feeds and try to sit him upright (harder at night)
I also think I have fast let down so have been hand expressing for about 30 seconds whilst he feeds until the milk stops “shooting out” (HV doesn’t seem to agree)
I’ve tried feeding him lying back but the pressure of his head on my breast ended up with us both being covered in milk

we’ve been giving him infacol for the last week and initially it seemed to help but the last day it seems that it actually makes his hiccups worse and after he’s had it he fusses and won’t latch.

his latch is good and he’s gaining weight, has plenty of wet and dirty nappies and I think this is why the HV isn’t concerned and just told me to do skin to skin and use the carrier which doesn’t help me when he hasn’t slept most of the night.

I wasn’t sure whether to try colief? Just looking for anyone who has experienced anything similar???

Wow. I came here for help and could've written this myself!! Exactly the same here with my 3 week old girl. She also coughs when feeding sometimes & makes a clicking noise which I think is to do with my let down.

Just to add he occasionally (every other day) has green poos

Sounds like oversupply/fast let down causing digestive symptoms potentially silent reflux. Green poos are indicative of this. Are they also bubbly? It's because they are gulping air as they feed.

Best person to see is a qualified lactation consultant. There are things they can do to help.

Clicking can also be a tongue tie/oral disfunction which can lead to similar symptoms as they are gulping air when they feed.

If a supply issue it does get better though as your supply regulates. Mine is always around 8 weeks

But newborns are also just like this. In my experience time is also needed for the digestive system to develop. I had no luck with any colief, infacol etc but doesn't hurt to try.

It's so difficult at this age because lots of things present with similar symptoms and it can be a case of ruling them out one by one.

The forceful letdown could be an issue. Kellymom has some tips here.

If LO is congested, there's a chance that they have CMPA.

And there's a chance it could also be Tongue Tie and then you have the possibility that it's one or more of these things Flowers

Would definitely suggest getting your LO checked for tongue tie x

Have you joined your local la Leche League or Baby Latte? What you really need is expert (not mw or HV) breastfeeding support because you're very likely to misinterpret normal behaviour of a newborn as signs of this or that and then seek unnces intervention (or change your feeding journey).
