DD is 9 weeks old and formula fed. She’s always bought up frequent, small amounts of milk but it didn’t bother her, gaining weight well etc. From 5 weeks I noticed that she was very fussy after feeds and basically only settled when held upright in the carrier - we couldn’t put her on her back at all in the day. The HV suggested gripe water which didn’t help (I didn’t think it would!) so I just held her upright most of the day and tilted her cot, both of which seemed to work until she started having very sudden, large possets (pretty much the whole bottle) with no warning. She was distressed by these (so was I!) so I bought some carobel thickener. This seemed to help a lot initially but she’s started bringing up milk again and becoming unsettled after feeds. I don’t think I can up the carobel anymore - we tried and she was so uncomfortable with wind. I’m writing now as she’s just brought up her whole bottle in her sleep, despite the feed being two hours earlier, me burping well and taking her for a half hour upright walk straight after. It was without warning, milk came out her mouth and nose and soaked her whole sleep suit through down to the toes and nappy (not to mention the state of the mattress and sheet underneath …). It was horrible to watch and she was so upset afterwards :(

When I spoke to the HV before I felt like I was making a fuss out of nothing but surely I can’t leave her like this? What else will help?

Hi op, sorry your baby is going through this. My son has acid reflux. His belly swelled up and he was constipated too.
What formula ate you using?
You ate doing all the right things anyway. It will take its time to get better. Maybe try gaviscon for baby

Take her the GP, they won't think you are making a fuss. They can prescribe infant gaviscon.

Verymilkybaby · 12/10/2023 08:46

Thanks all, would gaviscon help her keep it down or does it just stop it being uncomfortable to come up?

I’ve noticed she doesn’t seem to bring ready made formula up in the same way for some reason. Does anyone know why? We only use it when out but I could try using it more in the day …

How do you make your bottles op?
The bubbles can make it worse, so swirl don't shake them if you can. That will be why the ready made is helping it. Obviously with carobel it needs a good shake so we used to add one drop of infacol to the bottles and the bubbles dissappear!

Gaviscon can help keep it down, my twins didn't get on with it though and are on omeprazole and carobel both of which helped to no end.

Leave the carobel to stand for longer if you can't up it anymore, it thickens more.

Both my twins went through this phase of really awful vomits then one day, they just stopped and have never done it again. They're 7m old now and still always sick small amounts constantly, like a leaky tap! But it doesn't bother them.

Go to the GP though, no need to suffer!

They'll give you carobel/gaviscon on prescription as well so you won't need to buy it.

We gradually reduced the carobel as they got bigger and stronger and now only use one scoop in a 7oz bottle.

Just to confirm what others have said, my DS continuously brought up his bottles, pretty much every time. Once the GP prescribed infant gaviscon, it completely stopped it. Was a godsend!

Haven't read the thread but my son was exactly the same until about 3 months he had the comfort milk everything and was turning away feeds. Someone recommended me Daniel to me, it's a different makeup to the other formulas and it worked within two days. He's one next week and still guzzles his milk down
