Colic / Reflux / CMPA

I've spent hours and hours here trying to find answers for my newborn who was struggling so I thought I'd share my story so it can help others.

I have now a 7 weeks old daughter who has been struggling with reflux and colicky behaviour since she was about 1 week old. She was EBF for 2.5 weeks and after that we switched to EFF.

Here were her symptoms:

  • Arching her back and crying after each feed
  • Vomiting (sometimes projectile) and spitting up after each feed and between each feed
  • Screaming for hours every day and overall being a very unhappy baby. She would either be sleeping, eating or crying, never just awake and happy.
  • Impossible to put her on her back (she would be happy to be put on her side)
  • Grunting a lot during her sleep, she would wake up every 10/20 min crying or looking really uncomfortable
  • Developed really bad acne on her face and all down her neck that became really swollen and red after 4 weeks.

We tried EVERYTHING:

  • keeping her upright for 30 min after each feed, changing position for feeding etc.
  • Gaviscon (did nothing)
  • Infacol and dentinox (did nothing)
  • Anti reflux formula (gave her really bad diarrhoea + projectile vomiting)
  • Nutramigen to rule out a lactose intolerance (made her symptoms worst)

After several trip to the hospital, she was put on Omeprazole and we were told that she was just a newborn with reflux...

The Omeprazole helped a lot, but it did take a good 10-14 days to see any improvements! It didn't stop the vomiting but there was less crying.

Although she was still a very unhappy baby and the Omeprazole gave her constipation (we gave her Lactulose which helped). Her spots were getting worst and worst so we finally decided to put her on Neocate for a potential milk allergy.

All the doctors were telling us it's not that because she didn't have blood or mucus in her stools and didn't have a rash.

After 3 days on Neocate she was already a completely different baby! She is now smiling a lot, she no longer screams in pain for hours and is much much more settled. Even if she does cry, she can be comforted which was not the case before. Her spots have gone down as well.

It's been 8 days now and she keeps getting better. There is way less vomiting, even though it still happens.

Ideally we want to wean her off Omeprazole but I think it'll take another few weeks to get there.

If your baby is a very unhappy/unsettle baby, listen to your guts. If it's not just reflux, then it might be a milk allergy and it's worth giving a Neocate a go!

Thanks so much for this! Currently struggling with my 2 week old and I have a feeling it's a cow milk allergy. Glad you got it sorted and fingers crossed I do too!

Did you sort this? We are having the same issue with our 2 week old. GP has put her on gaviscon for silent reflux and they will review in 2 weeks but I’m positive it’s a milk allergy. Tempted to buy a tin myself to try as another 2 weeks of her crying and being so unsettled seems cruel

That's what I did at 3 weeks, just got a soya formula and I couldn't believe the difference. Though the doctor was pissy with me about it, I kept him on it and got it prescribed in the end. Always listen to your gut. Hope little one gets better soon 😊

Can I ask which formula you went with please? We’ve tried everything and still no improvement so the only thing left to try would be a dairy free formula.
This is what her stools are like, do they look like mucus is present? GP states this is a normal nappy

No picture came up. I got sma soya formula. You can get it at supermarket. Some cmpa babies are also allergic to soya though, I was lucky mine isn't. I'm not sure what other dairy free ones are in supermarket because I just went straight for the sma. Hopefully your little one could have it and be ok. It's a nightmare when they're in pain and you know it's their feed doing it. Don't understand doctor s making a baby stay in pain for that long

Same thing here! He just wouldn't stop screaming all the time, the only way I could get him to sleep was on my chest and I'd have to constantly rub his back, the acne was awful, he got so constipated and we tried all the recommended remedies but nothing helped. He had a gunky eye all the time, stuffy nose.

I spoke to my HV and midwife and they suggested I mention it to my Dr at my 6 week check. I didn't want to wait that long as he was clearly in pain and it was so upsetting for me to watch. I bought some SMA lactose free on a whim and he's a completely different baby. He sleeps 5-6 hours a night, toilets regularly, naps regularly without needing to be cuddled up to me, his skin is beautiful, the eye has cleared up and his breathing is lovely.

My 6 week check is late so I'm glad I did my own thing.

P.s I should add his Dad has a dairy intolerance!

How long did it take for little one to improve? We also bought the SMA LF last week and it seemed we had turned a corner and she had definitely improvement but since Saturday she seems to be unsettled again and nappies have gone from formed stools (last week) to mucusy this week.

Is it showing now?
How old was your little one when you switched to the SMA soya? As I thought it wasn’t suitable for babies under 6 month. We are currently using SMA so wouldn’t be swapping the brand of formula.

Yeah that's what a cmpa nappy looks like. Lactose free is just the sugars from dairy taken out so the allergy is more likely to the protein. Try the sma soya, mine was so much better and not in pain anymore when he had it. I'd definitely give it a go. Good luck 🤞

Devilsmommy · 17/06/2024 18:28

Sorry he was 3 weeks old and doctor started prescribing at 8 weeks old.

Just under two weeks, we had daily small improvements but we changed the milk 2 weeks yesterday and he’s absolutely thriving now xx

I’ve just had a little look for the soya formula but unfortunately can’t find it at any of the supermarkets near me. I looked on SMA online and it says they’re experiencing a shortage :(
we bought Neocate out of desperation one night she was very unsettled so I think we may try that for her next bottle.
thank you for your help :)
