Considering not breastfeeding because 38G nursing bras are £27+. What should I do?

Just a quick note as I'm going out the door, but I'll be back on to check responses tomorrow.

All nursing bras in size 38G are around £30 or more. I just can't afford it so I'm considering giving in before I've started and just bottle feeding. I've fought off everyone who's said bottle feed but now I'm at my wits end.

If I can't get a bra then I can't do it. My boobs are terrible as it is.

Does anyone know where I can get cheap bras?

Can anyone remind me why i wanted to breastfeed in the first place

BabiesEverywhere · 05/03/2008 17:56

I have massive breasts and I managed to buy a soft nursing bra from Asda for a £5.

You can save the cost of a computer if you don't buy formula for a year [[http://www.kellymom.com/bf/start/prepare/bfcostbenefits.html This link is too an USA site but look at the 'Equivalent Buying Power' column

mw told me that a bogstandard lyrca sports bra is just as good as special "nursing bras".

M&S do packs of 2 nursing bras in 38G for £25. You can buy them online. I have them and they are very comfortable - highly recommended

dressedupnowheretogo · 05/03/2008 21:18

chea[p bras are shit mothercares are crap and not big enough go to bravissimo when your milk is in and buy !!!!
if your a 36 l i have two you can have

if bras dont fit your boobs will sag thru poor support and it will be painful when yor full i can not stress this enough

i do not understand why yo would not pay out on something so important that you will constantly ?????????????

trixymalixy · 05/03/2008 21:24

Em, do you have any idea how much formula costs!!!!

Try ebay for nursing bras. i got away with just having 2.

Pannacotta · 05/03/2008 21:26

WHy dont you post a wanted ad on the classifed section here? Am sure some kind Mnetters will help you out (you've even had an offer already).
As all the others have said, formula, bottle, teats, steriliser etc will cost far more.
Does seem an odd thing to suggest you dont want to breastfeed due to the cost of nursing bras, surely you can seen past the intitial expense??

JodieG1 · 05/03/2008 21:26

Well you'll spend a lot more on bottle feeding that's for sure. Think about long term costs, even after about 6 weeks formula will cost more, plus bottles, sterilser, electricy to steralise or gas etc etc .

I'll remind you, because breastfeeding is better for your baby and they get more immunity and the milk that they are meant to have

Several on ebay at the mo

iwas going to say, just convert your normal bras into nursing bras. you can buy clips and elastic on ebay, and elsewhere, just google it ( i'm not going to do it for you )

TBH, sounds like a really really odd reason not to br feed. Are you sure this is the real reason? Is there anything else you are worrying about and would like to ask about? Surely the cost of 2 bras, in the whole scheme of how long you will feed your baby for, and the benefits of it, then even at £30 each ( trust me, you can get them fasr cheaper, as others have pointed out further back in the thread) then its worth it? The formula will cost you more than that any way! and the bottles, and the steriliser.... if your br feed, you won't necessarily need any of those things.

Go back to the budget again on this one... I went up to a a 36J measured at bravissimo, and I got a lovely lovely really comfy bra for £22 . I think maybe you have not researched this enough.

LOL... sorry nothing much to offer the debate... just interested... but that bit where BabiesEverywhere says she has massive breasts twice made me giggle...

Actually, I do have something to say. My ff dd2 is just coming up to a year, so we only have a quarter of a pack of formula left and then THAT'S IT - I AIN'T BUYING NO MORE!! I intend to buy lots of new bras and knickers with the money I will be saving!

And shoes. And coats. And skirts. And handbags. And shoes. And dresses. And shoes...

llareggub · 05/03/2008 21:40

Do you want mine? I have a couple of pairs you can have as I've finished with them. The white one is more grey than white but the black one is OK.

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/03/2008 21:47

You've got to be having a laugh!!

Do you really need reminding why you wanted to breastfeed in the first place?! Obviously we can't say why you wanted to, but there are soooooooo many reasons to that we could fill the thread with them!

Monkeybird · 05/03/2008 21:51

not giving up yet so might need em for a while but i will have some 38DD and E available which might not be a perfect fit and are quite loose on the chest but might do. You could adjust the straps a bit no doubt. Depending on when you need them we could negotiate. If I've finished with em you can have them for nothing cos it does sound like a daft reason not to feed?

ara · 05/03/2008 21:58

i bf in a normal bra as i too have big boobs and don't want to spend loads of cash. i started with two nursing bras donated by a friend but they were so uncomfy and unsupportive i gave up after a couple of weeks.

beanbearer · 05/03/2008 22:05

If you can find a local breastfeeding group nearby, they'll probably have some cheapish (maybe £10, £15 each) bras on sale. And once you've found them, you'll know where to go to regain some sanity in those early weeks. If you're anything like me you'll drink your way through the value of the bras in free tea and coffee over the next few months.

bluenosesaint · 05/03/2008 22:12

Nursing bras needn't cost the earth (i'm sure my first ones were from mothercare 2 for around 20 pounds?) and i'm large breasted too

Formula and all the paraphernalia that goes with it will cost a hell of a lot more!

Maybe you could ask someone to buy you a bra, or a voucher to buy a bra, as a gift instead of something for the baby? After all, its the baby who gets the benefits

Just a thought ...

beautifuldays · 05/03/2008 22:20

but formula will cost you about £500 for the first year......

Fizzylemonade · 06/03/2008 07:36

Just like Strawberrylace I was 38G and had those 2packs from M&S for £25 so thats £12.50 a bra. Yipeeee

tummytickler · 06/03/2008 19:31

Try E bay - i got a toatal of 6 very good bras for a total of about £30, and it was such a relief.
I had previously had some Mothercare ones that i bought as they were cheap and i thought i wouldn't bf for long at all. They were awful - so bad and it eventually after 3 months became a choice of give up bfing or buy some more - and bfing was going so well.
I really wish i had splashed out sooner as wonderful underwear really lifted my mood when i was feeling fat and horrid!
ds is nearly 7 months now and we are still going strong and i really believe that having good bras contributed massively to us getting this far, and you can get them cheaply (also on ebay it doesnt matter if you make a mistake in size, comfort, fit as thy are so cheap).
Good luck

babyboos · 07/03/2008 01:36

i got the clips from ebay too and they were great i then went on to adapt all sorts of garments -vest tops etc to make my own designer feeding tops for a fraction of the price

Lulumama · 07/03/2008 12:25

hi mumblesmummy....do you feel more reassured now?
