Help with windy newborn

Hi Mumsnet,

DS is 2 weeks old, exclusively breastfeeding, and suffering badly from trapped wind - lots of screaming, leg-kicking, and hard to settle.

Can this be caused with problems with latch? He seems to breath very heavily when feeding.

We have tried the usual burping methods, maybe a little helpful but not a total fix.

The other difficulty is he uses sucking for comfort, so often after burping he then wants to go back on the breast instead of resting and going to asleep.

Any other suggestions please? We are willing to try anything after a couple of restless nights!

Thanks!

I could have wrote this post myself 7 month ago 😂 I see no one else has replied so here goes…

Sorry not got much advice to give other than my DD was the same for the first 6/7 weeks. Tried all methods under the sun to get her to burp to no avail. We did use infacol which helped somewhat. Also used to try different stretches / massages to move wind along again to varying degrees of success.

In the end I used to have to keep her upright after every feed for at least 20 mins (yes day and night) which seemed to help prevent the gas from building up. There stomachs are very immature with weak muscles at this age which take 6 weeks or so to develop so unfortunately it’s just one of those things you need to ride out! I remember at the time it seemed like it would never get better but it does eventually I promise 😊

Anything in your diet that would be making her gassy? Broccoli, Brussels sprouts etc? Or excessive dairy can be an issue for some babies.

And could you offer a dummy when she’s done feeding to satisfy the sucking need?
