Has anyone done it successfully? My neighbour is trying to bf and her hv said it was ok to introduce 1 ff at night and I think she sometimes does 2. I know a colleague who went down this route and her baby fully ff very quickly but I wondered if anyone has managed it. She is also feeding lots and lots in the day which is very usual in my experience but I wonder will it make up for the bottle/s? I did tell her about supply issues but she didn't take it on board.

Thanks for all the replies. I have pointed most of this stuff out to her but to no avail. If I said that maybe the little night feeding is making the continous feeding in tha day phase last longer maybe that will interest her. Her mother lives with her and I think shes also a big bottle feeding influence. And maybe she doesn't want to carry on anyway and this is a way out.

I introduced a bottle at 5 weeks with DS and that was the end of breastfeeding for me - he was fully bottlefed by 7 weeks
So DD never saw a bottle until at least 6 months - LOL
BUT, I have a friend who has mixed fed all her children from birth and managed to keep it up for at least 6 months ... her youngest (of 4) is now 4 months and still happily mixed feeding ...
So it seems it works for some people ...

I find the whole thing about mixed feeding really interesting. I'm an avid breast feeding supporter and breast fed my ds for 13 mths ( stopped as i wanted to get pregnant!)

I work in an environment where lots of mums are of asian and somali backgrounds and they ALL mix feed. The interesting thing is that the vast majority are successful at keeping it up for at least 6 mths and more usually over a year.

I'm pregnant again and have a more open mind about introducing formula a bit earlier this time ( but wait until breast feeding is properly established)

Obviously everyone is different, but a lot of women manage to do it successfully.

I would not be suprised if the Asian women co-sleep and therefore feed through the night. It is culturally the norm in Asia to do this. So, if they are mixed feeding, but breastfeeding through the night, they will probably not have trouble keeping up supply or with baby rejecting the breast as it will be associated with sleep. I could be wrong, but that would be my (educated) guess.
