Baby bringing up clear liquid and choking on it - reflux?

My almost 8 week old DD has been bringing up lots of clear liquid the past few weeks and sometimes chokes on it. It's usually a couple of hours after feeds, in fact almost when she's due her next one. The HV and GP say it sounds like reflux so we've been trying Aptamil anti reflux formula and initially it did make a difference but it's starting to happen more now. This afternoon was her worst episode yet, she was on her mat kicking away and it was happening every so often but just small amounts and her head was to the side so it just came out and she barely noticed so I wasn't worried. Then she brought up a huge amount and choked on it, it was awful, it sounded like she was drowning 😭 I had to turn her over and then almost upside down to help her clear it because she couldn't breathe, she was bright red and stiff. She eventually cleared it but was then hysterical which isn't like her cos she's generally a happy baby.

I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this and what did you do? I told the HV about it earlier and she says she'll check with her colleagues and the GP but she thinks the next step would be omeprazole, I fail to see how that would stop the liquid coming up though? She's sometimes a little uncomfortable after feeds but nowhere near the extent other babies with reflux are. It's a complete mystery!

That must have been so scary. Has she given you any tips for when DD is asleep, like propping the head of the Moses basket up?

Sorry only just saw your reply, I'm using the app and didn't get a notification! No she didn't say anything like that but we do keep her upright after feeding for 20-30 mins. I've noticed it appears to get worse right before she's due another feed so could be something to do with an empty stomach? It's still happening but she's not choked on it for a few days, she's now been prescribed omeprazole but the chemist seems to be taking forever to get it in 🙄

Can I ask how she's been fed now?

Eleventweeny · 19/09/2023 15:31

I experienced exactly this with my daughter. It didn't seem normal at all, but nobody was interested because it was at the beginning of the pandemic. It stopped when she was about 10 months old and she's been fine ever since!

Bottle fed with Aptamil anti reflux, I have the omeprazole now but it says to give first thing in the morning on an empty stomach so will start it tomorrow morning xx

I'm sorry to hear you experienced this with your daughter too but I'm relieved it's not just us! Everyone just says "oh it's fine and completely normal, she'll grow out of it" she probably will but that doesn't make it any easier when she chokes on it and can't breathe for 10 seconds! Xx

Our son has been in A&E twice since he was born, latest was 2-days ago. He’s 7-wks old. Both times he’s woke up choking and frothing not able to clear his reflux, really scary. Like you it seems to be around the time he’s due his next feed.
we’re trying gaviscon, but finding it’s making him a bit constipated.
we had also been using infacol before, but we think that might have made him more sick. Any advice for sleeping arrangements?

So sorry to hear that, it's so frightening isn't it? I'm sorry I don't have any advice for sleeping arrangements because strangely enough it never happened overnight, BUT she's been put on Omeprazole and that has worked wonders! From a couple of days after starting it she's not had any more episodes so I'd ask your GP or HV about that. It's a liquid that we have to syringe feed to her first thing in the morning and then wait 30 mins before we feed her. If you do go down that route, an absolute godsend is an infant medicine dispenser, it's like a dummy with a hole in it and you syringe the medicine through it and it bypasses the taste buds so before they twig that they're actually swallowing something, the medicine is gone! Keep us updated, I really hope you find a solution xx

My 3 week old is suffering with this at the moment, did anyone get a diagnosis? We just keep being told it’s reflux but I just don’t think it is..

Sorry to hear that @TheProudHamFlowers

Does your LO have any of these symptoms?

Cow’s Milk Allergy

Cow’s milk allergy is an abnormal response by the body’s immune system in which proteins in a food are recognised as a potential threat.

she does, she is fussy after a feed and has a hard tummy, will fall asleep and then wake up in a panic lifting legs in pain, she sounds congested, almost like she needs a really good cough, she’s had another episode a few days ago, she was flat in her carrier and started choking on a clear fluid, and it’s silent choking, we pick her up immediately, we went to take her to A&E noticed she needed her nappy changed so put her flat to do that, and she did it again, went to A&E to be told it’s reflux :( which it could be, but it just seems
so different, when we got back, we put her flat to see, and she was fine, but I slept with her on me because I’m so so worried. We have spoke to the GP and asked for a specialised milk, and he has prescribed Aptamil Pepti 1 - I was supposed he did this just because I asked.. is it worth a go?

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 06/05/2026 21:51

Are you currently FFing @TheProudHam? If so I would start feeding the newly prescribed formula straightaway.

If you’re BFing or Combi-feeding you’ll need to go completely DF yourself. If you do use the formula, make Syed you follow the instructions on the carton as the preparation can be different than regular formulas and if you don’t follow the instructions you may destroy some of the nutrients.

So sorry you’re going through this, it must be so scary Flowers

Aww so sorry to hear you're going through it too. As far as we know it was reflux and the Omeprazole really helped. Once she was on solids it just wasn't an issue anymore and she's a healthy bossy almost-3 year old now 😊 hope you find a solution ❤️ xx
