Colic / Acid reflux

I have a 3 weeks old daughter that just won't stop crying...

Since a couple of weeks now she's been throwing up after each feed, hiccuping, coughing, crying arching her back, and seems overall to be very uncomfortable. We went to see a paediatrician who said she probably has reflux and colic.

She only sleeps out of exhaustion, otherwise she would feed and fall asleep for maybe 30 min up to one hour before screaming again... It would then take us 1-2 hours to settle her down again.

We tried gaviscon but it did nothing. The paediatrician prescribed Omeprazole which we have started today.

She was EBF until last week, we then did combo feeding (formula) but the paediatrician told us to stick to one milk - so she is now EFF (Hipp organic with MAM bottles).

He also told us to be careful with cluster feeding as she was at a point where she would feed every hour, probably more to soothe than anything else. He told us this would make it worst, so we are now on a more strict schedule feeding her every 3 hours. It did seem to improve the vomiting and reflux, but she is still screaming constantly (at this point not even sure why, probably just colic).

Anyway, I know time will make a difference but my husband and I are exhausted physically and mentally. We try to team up as much as possible so we can both get rest and a break from her but we're just getting more and more frustrated. We just don't know how to get through another 9 weeks like that when the last 2 seemed like pure hell.

Not even sure what I'm looking for as I've read every single thread on the topic and know there isn't a magical cure (at least not for us anyway).

We might try infacol without much hope and we booked an appointment with an osteopath. Trying every thing we can to make her feel better!

Anyone else going through this or have gone through this? What worked for you?

My lo didn't have reflux but was very colicky. He used to gulp too much air when feeding so would end up in absolute agony. He's also dairy intolerant. Infacol worked wonders for me but I don't know that it would have any use for reflux. Sorry can't be better help, hopefully someone comes along who's dealt with the same as you are

Thank you for your feedback :) We're going to give Infacol a go tonight, fingers crossed it'll have some effects on her 🙏🏼

If she's taking in alot of air and it's causing the agitation then infacol is brilliant. Really hope she gets some relief 😊

Use other colic drops. Infacol is orange flavoured so can aggravate reflux. Dentinox ones were good and can be put in a bottle.
hold baby upright for half hour after a feed.

My son had omeprazole and carobel to thicken his milk to help it stay down.
he grew out of his GORD at around 14 months.

This

Infacol definitely aggravates reflux.
My lo pediatrician did tell us when they're that little that reflux is mostly a symptom of something. In our case dairy and soya allergy. Maybe look into that x

Update for the ones that might be in the same situation:

  • We gave her Infacol which seems to have massively helped her winds! She seems way less in pain, no more arching her back an hour after each feed and she was a tad constipated after switching from BF to FF and it helped with that as well.

Not sure how much it will affect her acid reflux, we're going to stick to this for a few days and see how it goes and might switch to another colic drop if her reflux gets worst (as recommended here).

  • Her reflux has settled down, I think what made the biggest difference is sticking to a strict schedule with feeding. She is fed every 3 hours and we try to not over feed her and stick to what the paediatrician recommended. No idea the impact of Omeprazole but we will keep going with it.
  • Keeping her upright for a minimum of 20 min after each feed, on my chest, seems to be helping. I also bought a sling and she really enjoys that position and it allows me to move around more freely.
  • We elevated her bed with books under the recommendation of the paediatrician as well, not sure how much it impacts it but it works fine!

If I have new findings I will share them here as well ;)
