Lighterlife type diets and Breastfeeding - is it possible??

I am not exclusively breastfeeding DS: he is 9 months old and eats well. He has a feed in the morning and one before bed, with an occasional mid-afternoon feed.

How do VLCD affect breastmilk? Will my supply disappear completely? Will the toxins lost if I do lose weight quickly go into the breastmilk?

I think I know the answer - a sensible eating plan and 1-2lb per week loss such as Weightwatchers is the best idea, but I would love to shift some weight fast!

As you say,you already have the answer.
Nop oint in losing weight fast.It messes up ypur matabolism so that you burn calories even less effectively in future and put weight on even quicker.

And no,no toxins will seep into yuor milk.

Oh, Moondog, I know, I know. But have just seen SIL who lost 2 stones in a month on a VLCD, and I am jealous. AND my sister is getting married in May, and I really would like to be smaller than the back-end of a bus by then!

yes, technically you can do VLCD if not exclusively breastfeeding and baby is having other forms of foods (ie solids)

BUT

having done it myself i really wouldnt recommend it.

Slimming world have a special plan for breastfeedign and expanctant mothers . you get extra syns for that all imprtant chocolate...

Gingerbear · 02/03/2008 19:49

Why wouldn't you recommend it? Because of the post diet weight-gain, metabolism stuff etc? Are you doing SW now misdee?

OP posts:
Gingerbear · 02/03/2008 19:50

I think with WW you get 6 extra points - more than enough for chocolate!

because its bloody hard GB i had an inner fight between wanting to do the best for dd3 (similar age to your ds now, at the time) and worrying it was affecting supply. i managed about 2 weeks before jacking it in.

yes i am on Sw now, and am 1stone down sicne istarted it in oct (i am going for the slow route as loads of 'first' coming up regarding peter post-transplant so still celebrating lol), but had kept off a stone previous to that when i did cambridge diet last summer (packed in as peter got really ill).

VLCD and hard. i think it was one of the hardest diets i did as i am an out and out food addict.

Console yourself with the thought that by the time you've lost your two stone, your SIL will have regained all hers and probably a little bit more.

Yes, I know that's a deeply uncharitable, even horrible, thing to say, but I am clearly that kind of person. Deep down.

Gingerbear · 02/03/2008 20:46

I know they are hard - I have witnessed how tough and determined Yorkiegirl was to lose all her weight on lighterlife (she has put some back on, but not much).

It is all about your state of mind isn't it? I think that is where the counselling comes in - be it SW, WW or lighterlife or Cambridge.

And getting off my backside and moving about more!!

Corriedale, you are Baaad!

Misdee - you don't get extra syns! You get extra healthy extras... which you can use to have a couple of extra choc orange hifi bars

DH has lost 17kg since the start of the year on a 1500 cal or so a day diet. He has a small bowl (he measures it out into little bags so that when he's eating it it doesn't seem so restricted) of cereal for breakfast, soup for lunch (fresh soup, huge pot of veg type is 300 cal), and then usually a microwave diet ready meal for dinner. He's walking every day for excercise, but building it into doing things like going to the supermarket and carrying the stuff home.

His main incentive is that I said if he couldn't do it on his own, he'd have to go to WW and talk about his feelings about food.

I have a friend who has lost 5 stone 3 times, and each time put it all back on. Currently she's doing LL, but I don't think that the 'counselling' is really doing her any good, as her other issues around food are still going strong.

A colleague who lost 8 stone, and has kept it all off for 4 years now says that the only things that really works is regarding food as a manky ex lover - you love them, they don't love you. You move on and deal with it, because at the end of the day you have to divorce that eating pattern - so you have to not think of it in terms of choc bars....

Get out with the pushchair and get moving ! A sling will burn extra calories too !

bouncing turtle, i n a way i was right. we are t5old between 5-15syns a day, but to aim for 10 if posisble.

slimming world says...

When breastfeeding, your body requires extra energy and calcium so we recommend you enjoy additional Healthy Extras on top of your usual 2a and 2b choices. We also recommend that you enjoy the full 15 Syns a day.

Baby?s age
No. of extra
Healthy Extras

Up to 2 months
3

2 to 3 months
4

4 to 6 months
if starting to wean
3

4 to 6 months
if breast milk is the only source of nutrient for your baby
4

Over 6 months when weaning
1

We recommend that one, or preferably two, of your additional Healthy Extra choices are made from the milk and cheese section.

The recommended daily intake of calcium for breastfeeding mums increases from 700mg to 1,250mg per day. The following table lists good dietary sources of calcium, providing you with plenty of healthy ways in which to increase your calcium intake:

Bouncingturtle · 04/03/2008 09:24

Correct

The rest of the class was very jealous when they found out I could have 4 extra HE everyday
mmmm choc orange hifi bars yum!!!

Gingerbear · 04/03/2008 13:39

Right! I have started WW again . I was doing WW when I became pregnant, so have all the books etc. Rang my leader - you are quite right Fiofio, it is 5 extra points not 6 as I thought.
Have been out for a walk with DS this morning, and as the sun is shining, I feel better already! Weigh-in is next week.

You are right of course, ww fits far better into a normal lifestyle when breastfeeding than 3 milkshakes per day.

I have also started drinking a lot more water, I always forget to drink 8 glasses per day!

I think this thread needs shifting into the Big/slim topic!!
