hi, my milk has just come in engorged breasts, but baby won't feed. hand expressing a bit off this morning made a feed possible, but now lo won't even try to latch on and crying frantically.

i ate loads of salty crisps this afternoon - could this be putting her off.

so so grateful for advice

Have you tried expressing again, just to take away some of the fullness? It can be hard for baby to latch on when they are engorged.

oh dear.....

don;t panic, crisps won't be the issue.

have you tried just holding baby and making a few drops of expressed milk go into her mouth while she is very close to your nipple???

I am no expert (there are some fab ones here, ticktock is one!), but I found that was ne of the ways I tried.

what position are you using? i found the rugby/under the arm one worked best for tiny baby.
oh the 3rd day is the worst.

I'm no expert either but can only suggest expressing first to lessen the engorgement. Fresh babies only have tiny little mouths so it's much easier for them to latch if the boob is soft. Hopefully TickTock or someone of similar wisdom will come along soon to help you out.

I really really really doubt it was the crisps! I find that chocolate muffins are the best BF food.

Can you take a shower and hand express in the shower for a bit to take the hardness of your breasts? Or another possibility is to feed your baby in the bath.

I don't think the crisps have anything to do with it

Echo comments about hand expressing abit again. just to soften breasts and help latch.

Since your babe is so young how about calling midwife? or take a look at hunker's site it has bf helplines at the right hand side, might be worht a call if you get worried.

but tbh I'd express, keep trying, and call midwife in morning

mitfordsisters, I agree - you need a midwife not a talkboard (or not just a talkboard!). Call and get one to come asap.

Crisps will have had no effect at all, BTW.

Hope you had a better night.

Try baby-led attachment/biological nurturing (google or search archives) and if your baby is still having difficulties, hand expressing and getting the result into your baby is important at this stage.

But early latching problems are not at all uncommon, and they do resolve
