Breastfed 10 month old

I am still breast feeding my 10 month old ds but for the last few weeks I am getting worried that hes not getting enough fluids and in particular that I could get more nutrients and Volume of fluid into him if I gave him a bottle of formula ....or that follow on milk at night .
I do worry about this because he was 5 weeks early and SMALL . 4 lbs 6 oz..... and hes still on the small side . Also the hospital reccomended Iron supplements as he was premature ....although they admitted the need was doubtful ........??????? Has anyone any experience.

I have never worried until now that my milk wasnt adequate for him......but now hes only on 2 or 3 feeds in 24 hours . He takes drinks of juice from a sippy cup with meals . For the sake of his nutrition and general weight gain .....Would it be wise to start him on a bottle ............ ( btw he has had bottles before with ebm ) .

I plan to continue breast feeding until hes about a year ...or prehaps more .

Provided he is eating a balanced healthy diet (however small) surely breast milk is the best thing for him, it's tailored for human infants! He is probably just meant to be "small" as a child although puberty could change that (suddenly become tall or chunky or be the same!)

formula is not more nutritious than breastmilk !!!! My 11 mth old still feeds at night. But aside from that from 7am to 7pm he has three feeds only. He has water no juice from a cup. My ds2 is on 25th centile for weight. No need to change his milk and in tw months time you can offer cows milk!

He's a bit old to be starting bottles surely? follow on milk is a waste of money - just give him more food, ie cheese, yoghurts etc or ordinary milk in a ordinary beaker or even a normal cup if you hold it for him.

My ds hardly drank or ate anything much till he was a year old but is fine. HV said to give lots of high calorie snacks. He's a bit small but that's just the way he's going to be. Breast milk changes to meet a baby's needs so your baby should be fine.

Thanks so much mumsnetters . Thats all very reassuring .

I have no problem with him always being small . I got used to that in pregnancy . You should have seen my bump .....it was small too !! ( he had IUGR ...placental insufficiency ).
Its just his general chunkiness that im keepin an eye on . I know the tend to loose weight when they start moving about ...... hes not crawling yet ....

Agree Eul ...bottles would certainally be a retrograde step .... Im just so fed up seeing all thes younger babies who seem to be passing him out in terms of development And size. And Its OK I KNOW theres nothing wrong with him.

Thanks again for the tips ....I hadnt thought about trying a normal cup!!!!
Certainally worth a try soon .

Mine was on 3 feeds a day at that age. Big feeds first thing and last thing and one smaller one in the middle of the day. It's enough. Food should be taking over from milk at this stage and if you're worried about the calcium and iron intake, then they can get that from other sources, dairy or whatever. Would definitely not introduce a bottle at this stage, something else to wean them off later and if he's drinking out of a cup now, there's no point. After one year they can have cow's milk as a drink, but mine doesn't like it much, so she only gets milk from me at 14 months and I've cut out the afternoon feed.
