Increasing supply at 10 months?

WorriedMum13 · 17/08/2023 22:22

I'd hoped to reach 1 year breastfeeding my daughter (currently 10months) but finding my supply slowing down each day.

Morning feed and late morning feed are fine but by afternoon and evening i'm pretty much empty. I know I'm empty because she starts playing, biting/pinching rather than drinking.
I've built up a small freezer stash and will use this if I feel like she isn't getting anything and then I'll pump to make up for the bottle but I'm lucky if I get 2oz after 20 mins. My freezer supply is getting low, I have around 70oz left which won't last long.

I really want to reach the year mark (longer if possible). Does anyone have any advice? I've added an evening pump after she goes to bed but I've not noticed an increase in my supply.

I BF my son until 16months and never had this problem but he was far more interested in feeding than my daughter. We also coslept until 14months and he fed during the night, where as DD is in her own cot and dropped night feeds around 6 weeks ago.

congrats on getting to 10 months.

What you express is no indication of supply. Even the best pumps are no match for baby.

At this age, it’s unlikely to be supply, rather they’re want. If baby isn’t feeding during the day likely they are ready to drop the feed and have a snack / water instead.

At 10 months feeding twice a day is fine.

Totally agree with this Wink

Thanks both for your reply. She loves her food so you are probably right, I'll see how we get on with a morning and night feed.

If she was FF she'd only need 400 ml so two feed is plenty.

I'd drop down to 3 feeds for now, replacing one with a drink and a snack, then if that goes ok, drop the third feed after a couple of weeks Wink

Agree that what you express is no indication of supply. My 9 month old also pinches and pulls on the boob which is their way of trying to tell your boob to make more milk or more calorific milk because they need more at the moment. It's normal, and doesn't mean "there's an issue with supply". It's part of the ebb and flow of milk making throughout infancy. Trust the process, it's brought you this far! Just continue to feed on demand as you have so far and trust your baby and boobs to get it right. I honestly wouldn't express either, unless you need to because of you're back at work or something?

Oh and "feeling empty" is also normal at this point. The milk you're giving is very calorific but smaller in volume, it's normal for your boobs not to feel full with milk anymore.

Yes, I'll be returning to work in a few weeks which is my main concern. I'll feed her in the morning but assumed she would need at least 2 bottles of expressed milk throughout the day.
