my 18 week old has been exclusively breastfeeding and will take expressed milk in a bottle but will not entertain milk powder. Any tips?

don't force it

why do you need her to have formula?

neeka · 28/02/2008 17:30

she is feeding erractically and i'm concerned she isn't getting enough. Also she is teething and i've always said my kids can breastfeed til 6 months or teeth come, which ever is first

why are you concerned she's not getting enough? is she losing weight? not weeing and pooing? listless and apathetic rather than bright and lively?

and teething does not = teeth, they can be 'teething' for ages before anything breaks through

(not trying to make you continue if you're set on giving up, but it does seem a bit silly to fight to make a reluctant child take formula for no reason)

neeka, I don't understand why you are so certain that breastfeeding has to stop with teeth or an age limit - would it not be easier all round to be a bit more flexible, seeing your baby does not want formula?

Feeding erratically can happen at any time, breast or bottle

thefortbuilder · 28/02/2008 17:58

ds started the teething circuit at about 20 weeks but one didn't actually appear for ages, really ages.

flexibility is the key i reckon - stick with it if you can!

thefortbuilder · 28/02/2008 17:59

sorry tiktok just realised i've jsut repeated what you said

tiktok · 28/02/2008 18:03

'Sokay, flick

Neeka, I'm conscious your question has not been answered, but I don't think it can be, really....you're asking for tips on doing something your baby doesn't want to do, something she really doesn't need, and for reasons that don't stand up, so it's hard to know what to say!

Sorry.

Are you heating the bottle up? Maybe difference in temparature which is making it noticeable iyswim??

zebedee1 · 28/02/2008 19:42

Hi Neeka, no advice as to how to get your little one to take formula as my stubborn DS (9 months) will not entertain formula in any bottle/cup/beaker/spoon despite 6 months of trying!

............BUT I can reassure you that this same DS now has 6 teeth and has only bitten me once. A sharp "no don't hurt mummy" and removal from the breast seemed to work as he has never bitten me since.
