Questions about going down to 2 BFs a day at 12mo

I am considering going back to work 2 days a week. DS currently feeds first thing, mid-afternoon and bedtime, so obviously I would need to phase out the afternoon feed.

My questions are:

  1. Should I replace the afternoon feed with formula? He can't have cow's milk as is allergic, so would need to be Nutramigen/Neocate. Or should I just replace it with a snack.
  1. Should I keep the afternoon BF on the days when I'm not at work?
  1. I have fed one-sided since he was very small. If I am only doing morning and night feeds, do I need to swap to two-sided feeding to keep my supply up? Otherwise I will only be feeding from each boob once a day...

Should add that my boobs are rubbish at expressing, so I don't think I could give EBM for the afternoon feed.

From my limited experience of having done this once...

  1. No harm in replacing with formula if he wants it, but I would suggest using a cup rather than a bottle. I tried to do this but ds refused the milk, so just gave a snack instead.
  1. Should be no problem with keeping up the afternoon bf.
  1. I used to feed one-sided but offered both sides when we went down to 2 feeds a day. Ds often refused the second one anyway to start with, although now he usually has both. Did make me a little bit lop-sided for a few days - but I adapted quite quickly!

This is interesting, my ds is 14 months and I thought I would have stopped bf by now but he still has at least the bedtime feed, sometimes one in the early morning, and even afternoon if we're at home.
I think at this age, if you're not there he won't miss the feeds, so whoever's looking after him can give a snack or other drink in the afternoon.
Where it's only two days a week, he won't be too confused either by you continuing to feed, as long as you want to!
