Those with delayed CMPA babies…

For those with delayed CMPA babies, did your LO show symptoms after every feed or did some feeds appear to be ok?

LO is nearly 7 weeks, was EBF but due to mastitis I transitioned to EFF, since fully in formula he’s been a very unsettled baby, he wasn’t settled on BM but this is worse. My DD had silent reflux which was obvious due to the acidic smell and appearing to choke etc so didn’t think it was that anyway DR does. I had switched to comfort milk and not much better so Dr prescribed a high dose of omeprazole and symptoms have reduced somewhat but still have the majority. The next stage is trying a hypo allergenic milk but dr doesn’t want to see us until we’ve given Omeprazole for 2 weeks.

These are the symptoms - does it sound like CMPA? If so I’ll push to see Dr earlier

’colicky’ baby - can scream for hours a day with no settling
sounding congested / sneezing - like they have a cold but we’ve done saline spray / snufflebabe (whichever one is suitable from birth) and no help
hard to burp / wind and struggles to bring it up l - screams afterwards
doesnt sleep well unless upright (though this can be typical newborn behaviour)
nappies vary between normal and not with some being loose and others quite firm and difficult to pass (again the difficult to pass can be normal I admit

I Know all babies are different but he just doesn’t seem happy, so for those with a CMPA baby does it sound familiar / does it generally happen after every feed? We might get one feed which he takes ‘ok’ and does all the above 1/2 hours later rather than 30 mins for example.

Hi, my son is nearly 5 months and under investigation for CMPA. I’ve been dairy free for 2+ weeks now, and waiting to see if it helps. His symptoms didn’t appear until he was about 3 months, his nappies turned greenish and runny then he developed a rash. His weight gain has always been good and he hasn’t been too unsettled bar evening screaming. He has also been congested and snotty sounding.

However every baby presents differently. I would see the GP, if they think he might have it then it’s a process of elimination so they will prescribe special formula to see if the symptoms clear.

I think every baby is so different. Mine was just really bad eczema- no stomach issues at all. Definitely see the GP. We were lucky to have milk and egg allergies confirmed by an allergy test though I don't know if they offer this anymore.

Thanks both,

I’m happy to try and eliminate with the GP but just wondered if it was possible to have one good feed a day and the rest all a bit of a battle including afterwards.

Its exhausting trying to settle an unhappy baby with you’ve got a toddler too so just want to try and get a resolution asap 😢

My 14 month old has CMPA & other allergies his main symptoms which was never ending the rash would settle but then immediately flared when feeding . After a battle with the GP he prescribed Neocate and after a few bottles was a different baby.

You find your GP is very dismissive and offer reflux medication first stand your ground and ask for a hydrolysed formula usually Aptimal Pept1 .

Rash
nasal congestion
mucus in stools
stools were either constipation or too loose.
reflux

we still get all of the above if he consumes something he’s allergic to !

Thank you @ScoobyBooby - LO doesn’t get a rash though has dry skin around his eyes but has nasal congestion, reflux and nappies are either constipated or loose too. I’ll give the omeprazole a few more days and maybe go back mid week.

He tolerates some feeds well though which is just really confusing as I would have expected every one a battle but having an unsettled baby for 1/2 hours after a feed is draining to be honest.
