Kendamil - not agreeing with my baby, help?

SMRai · 04/08/2023 17:22

Hi.
I have used Kendamil from
birth for my little one.
she is now 6 weeks and I have noticed, severe gas, constipation and now almost like she has phlem/mucus in her throat.
She was never a sicky baby from birth and but now acts like she wants to be sick, putting fingers to mouth. Her breath smells of sick all this is new and never happened before till now.

she has mucus (stringy/slimy) in her poo, seedy mustard colour poo.
she also strains and cry’s a lot when poo and has been constipated before.

has anyone else experienced these symptoms on Kendamil? Can my baby all
off sudden stop agreeing to Kendamil after being on it from birth with no concerns?

There are lots of threads about Kendamil not agreeing with babies.

I'd swap to a different brand, but not Aptamil as that seems to cause problems as well.

addler · 04/08/2023 22:20

Sometimes the more expensive brands aren't necessarily the best brand for your baby. When DD moved to formula we started her with one of the 'better' brands in our country and she had huge issues with wind. Changed to a cheaper one and it's been much easier for her.

Hi 👋🏻

Kendamil mum here.

Around 6-8 weeks their guts start changing/maturing which can cause all number of random “symptoms”.

My boy did exactly this. Within a couple of weeks he was fine again x

OneDayAtATimeHG · 05/08/2023 11:48

Currently having the exact same problem with Kendamil with my 6 week old, switched from aptimal 8 days ago and then mucus in throat started the very next day.

Can hear it at the back of her throat and seems to be a lot worse in the morning. She has started to eat a tad less aswell, I’m assuming this is down to the mucus in her throat.

Made the switch as aptimal was giving severe gas, making baby’s tummy rock hard. Kendamil has stopped all this but mucus in throat started.

Using organic Kendamil, that and the original are very similar, be interesting to see if it clears up soon, going to give it another week and see how we get on.

If it dont clear up within another weeks going to have to look another formula hipp organic might be the next option for us.

SMRai · 05/08/2023 13:43

Hi,

oh no I feel for your little one, the mucus in the throat is horrible to watch. I did try a humidifier for few days it helped.

I did try the organic Kendamil as well hoping it’ll help with the mucus but it didn’t.

I actually changed to Aptamil organic and last night my poor baby could hear her tummy rumbling/ gurgling and her crying in agony with bad gas even tho mucus has stopped but wind is horrendous.

Ive ordered Hipp and hopefully this will help her. She’s started to feed less as well.

fingers crossed for your little one.

Yeah is not nice and the sounds she makes at night make you bolt up right.

we went to the doctors and they checked her over and said she’s a healthy baby. Doc said the change of milk would be the issue and she needs to get used to it.

we try and sit her up an hour before bed so as much mucus as possible is hopefully gone down her throat.

Aptiml is a big no go for us, she’s much more content on Kendamil just mucus being the only
issue but take that over, constant straining, red in the face, not pooing for 3 days.

HV is coming out Monday so will see what she says, HIPP is going to be out next option if HV advises to change milk again.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 05/08/2023 19:50

@SMRai it may be that your LO has CMPA. Do any of the symptoms sound like these?

raffika · 05/08/2023 22:21

Kendamil Classic didn't agree with my baby but he's got on much better with Kendamil Goat.

The advice is that you should trial a formula for 2 weeks before making further changes, even if it means riding out a rough period, unless your HV advises otherwise. With multiple changes in a short space of time, baby's digestive system won't know if its coming or going, and you are not getting an accurate picture of whether a particular formula is working or not.

The advice I had with formula changing is to first try a swap to another brand of first infant formula for 2 weeks, and if that doesn't work then look at a specialist milk - goat, comfort etc.

I've not heard of that advice before, do you have a link please? Wink

I don’t - that was the advice from my HV.

If your baby is having these issues, I’d suggest speaking to your HV or local infant feeding team - mine hav even really good though I appreciate that’s not the case for everyone.

Your GP might also be helpful (though the Drs I have seen have been useless for all things baby).

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 06/08/2023 07:46

I don’t - that was the advice from my HV. I take it with a pinch of salt then. My HV gave out the most bizarre and sometimes dangerous "advice" and when I asked her to "point me in the direction of the research to back it up" she never could.

Garman · 06/08/2023 07:49

That is the correct advice, switching formulas after a few feeds/days is too tough on baby’s stomachs when they’re already struggling to digest it.

I'm not arguing, just would like to read the research Wink

Garman · 06/08/2023 08:07

Well your passive aggressive winky faces suggest otherwise so maybe ditch them if you’re not arguing.

It's not winky, it's the smiling emoji. I am genuinely interested reading the research as I've been on MN for years and never heard of this advice until it was mentioned on this thread.

OP - this sounds like cows milk
Protein allergy to me. It's quite common and you might need a specialist milk. GP can prescribe.

Given that all formula milks that meet the very strict regulatory formula requirements to be sold in the UK are identical I am struggling with the logic that changing formula could help. I'd go and see your GP

They’re made to the same nutritional standards but they are not the same.

For example: Kendamil doesn’t contact palm oil or fish oil, whereas all other formulas contain at least one of those, if not both. The nutrients from those ingredients come from elsewhere in Kendamil. Comfort milks are partially hydrolysed and have lower levels of lactose, and have added thickener (but different brands use different thickeners). Goats milk has lower lactose and different fat composition.

The subtle differences between the brands and types of formulas mean there is massive scope for particular formulas to agree or disagree with a baby’s highly sensitive digestive system.

Baby has colic 3weeks old, using kendamil which he seems to like, I’ve ordered the kendamil comfort to try and help with his gas, any recommendations on how to serve as seems like he has trouble getting it through teat, when we push seems to come fine out but with this milk he sucks and then cry’s. Bottles we use are mam with the first nipple. Should we go up to teat 2 at only 3 weeks to help with the flow of milk which I suspect may be thicker? Any advice welcoem, can’t find anything on their website.
have also tried using a little extra water when making but does not help him feed

OneDayAtATimeHG · 08/12/2023 00:43

@Marianna87

I wouldn’t mess with the water to formula ratio as advised on the tins. If baby is backed up or constipated you can give 1oz or cooled boiled water, when we did this the next day we’d have a coupe of dirty nappies.

have you tried any products to help with the gas ? We use dentinox colic drops these work wonder for us, removes all the bubbles from the milk after a couple of shakes. also when baby is a month old you can start to use gripe water, we always have this stocked in the cupboard as gives baby instant relief.

i would try these rather than the comfort milk for now and see how you get on , unless HV advises you to do so.

teets I would stick to the guidelines, teet two is a couple months old, we went onto teet 2 mam at 3 months and had to go back to teet 1 as bay was getting too much air, now on teet 2 at 5 months and all okay.

have you had baby checked for tongue tie as this can affect the sucking action hence not getting any milk.

SMRai · 08/12/2023 07:59

Hi. @Marianna87

I 100% don’t recommend starting comfort or colic based formula unless you’ve had advice for HV or GP.

This was one of my biggest mistakes, baby wasn’t ready and baby didn’t really need the comfort formula, I panicked and just wanted to try anything. In Turn this just made my babies colic worse.

Have you tired antic colic bottles? I used Tommee Tippee advanced colic and bottles and teats. They were amazing, the bubbles from shaking which caused air for the baby disappeared within minutes.

try not to shake the formula bottle really hard, try and swirl it. The air bubbles really don’t help with colic.

Dentinox helped my little one as well but only short term relief. I didn’t want to keep using it weeks on end.

I don’t recommend changing teats just yet either or messing with the water levels for the formula, those strict guidelines need to be adhered to.

Also keeping baby upright position for as long as possible after feeding to get burps out.

Colic is very challenging and exhausting. I was losing so much sleep becuase I just wanted my baby to be content, I tried so many things. The things recommended above worked for me and also Gripe water was 100% a god send.

it does it easier, good luck xx
