Any suggestions for getting baby to latch after sudden disconnect with the breast?

Hi,

Asking on behalf of my partner. We have just had our second child and after one week of breastfeeding have hit a real wall. Everything was going pretty well, admittedly feeding was only off one breast but our DD was on for an hour. My partner was expressing using a pump and last night to give her a night time break, I have DD a feed on expressed milk from the bottle. She was cranky throughout the experience but did get most of it down her. Today however, absolute refusal to take the breast. She'll lick it, give a half assed suck and then get stressed and cry.

Personally, I'm not worried as our DS was formula fed and is a robust young boy who is hitting all his development targets. However, it is having a massive impact on my partners mental health as she really wanted to breastfeed and feels like she has lost a key bonding experience with her daughter.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get a baby to re-engage with the breast.

She needs to ring one of the BFing Helplines and talk all of this through with a BFC. They will be able to support her and talk to her about how she's feeling.

Does she have the numbers?

What's clear from your post is that you're not concerned if she BFs or not. What she needs right now is your support to BF. So look after LO between feeds and bring her snacks and drinks when she is feeding.

LO is so young still and with the right support she can still BF, if that's what she wants to do.
