Projectile vomiting…

Hi,

So our little one is 2 weeks old today. He’s doing well in terms of sleeping, gaining weight etc - so we’re off to a good start.

Our question is about feeding and the milk coming back up. He’s a bit sicky generally but doesn’t seem to cause him any discomfort or affect his weight gain etc, but today it’s gone to a new level where he’s projectile vomited after every feed. We’re obviously concerned but not sure if it’s a reaction to what’s in the milk, or the volume of milk, or if it’s just a bad day…

has any had a similar experience and can share their thoughts on what it could be, and how we can help him?

thanks in advance x

are you winding during the feed ?

Hi 😊
My little neice did this as well.

Just thinking of a few things:
Could he be constipated?
How often would you burp him throughout the feed?
If its bottle, is the little vent at his nose?

Yes we stop to burp him every 5 minutes and he’s being sick whilst on the breast during that period (to answer the question on whether he’s breastfeeding or on the bottle). He’s just had a bad 5 minutes of sick and some loose stool so I’m wondering if it’s bug…

Keep watching for wet nappies, and try to keep him upright for a bit after feeding.

I’d pop yourselves down to a local breastfeeding group and see what they say.

In the meantime you can try the laid back or natural feeding position. Baby is upright so much better if they’re suffering with any reflux.

If it's true projectile vomiting it could be pyloric stenosis. Where the pyloric opening in the stomach is narrowed. Babies get dehydrated very quickly as each feed is vomiting up. Please get him seen asap to tilt this out. (Paediatric nurse)

If it’s just today it’s probably a tummy bug. Has he been to baby groups or anywhere he could pick something up?

If it continues then definitely get him seen to rule out pyloric stenosis.

Keep an eye on his nappies, make sure he’s wetting plenty.

Just because it's only suddenly come on, before going down a rabbit hole of all sorts of horrible problems with complex fixes, I'd rule out the possibility that he's picked up a vomiting bug by giving it a day or two to settle because your life will be a LOT easier if this is the case.

If he's still doing it, then get him to a GP to be properly diagnosed. Mine had these symptoms with CMPA but they need to rule out other conditions first as it's a diagnosis by elimination (it shouldn't be, but it usually takes over a year to get a proper allergy test) due to how quickly you need to change the milk etc. The constant little bits of sick are very likely reflux which is a symptom of a lot of different things or sometimes isn't a sign of anything more complicated, but again needs looking into. My first DC had constant little bits of sick until he was 1 (even after we got him onto dairy free milk).
