9 week old screaming at breast, sleeping all day

My 9 week old (exclusively breastfed) has started screaming as soon as she's close to my breasts and refusing to feed/latch. This has been happening in the evenings recently and today it's been pretty much all day after her first feed of the day. She's had 2 5min feeds since then that ended in her screaming. Inbetween all this, she's been sleeping a lot longer too.

I plan to speak to GP in morning. Any advice/similar experiences?

I'd call one if the BFing Helplines now. Have you got the numbers?

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 13/07/2023 21:55

Have you checked her temperature? Might she have a sore throat or ear that's making feeding uncomfortable?

QuietCat · 13/07/2023 22:02

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername thank you! Have been checking regularly all day, all well below 38 so within normal

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto good suggestion, the national breastfeeding helpline is closed for the evening now, are there any others you recommend? Many thanks

La Leche League is open until 11pmFlowers

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto
Thank you! They were super helpful.

Advice - in case someone else searches on similar issue:
She might simply not be hungry and to leave her be - I was trying to feed her as it had been over 3 hours and she would normally feed around every 2 during day (every day is different with a baby...), might be under the weather slightly and to try some calpol (will do her no harm if she is well), try feeding stood up/in a different position as it was coming onto my lap that starts the screaming, to try giving her some hand expressed milk on a teaspoon if I feel she really needs to feed (I don't have a breast pump or bottles), phone GP in morning for a check up.

That does sound helpful. If you have a syringe you could try feeding her a looitie with that too or getting your DH/DP to try.

Sleeping a lot can be a sign of illness in a young baby. Maybe get her checked over if it continues.

justasking111 · 13/07/2023 23:02

Think you should see the GP. It could be thrush.

QuietCat · 13/07/2023 23:16

@justasking111 funny you suggest thrush as I have had deep breast pains the last couple weeks and I thought it was thrush... gp thought it might be tongue tie and recommended I attend BF clinic... they advised there that it was likely vasospasm (which does also fit thrush symptoms). Baby has no signs of thrush in mouth though...
Will mention this to GP... would thrush cause baby to sleep more?

Your baby may have been taking in less milk so is hungry thirsty. That can cause lethargy. Thrush is easily treated

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 14/07/2023 08:43

There's some information on thrush here and Tongue Tie here.

Might be worth reading these before you see the GP as they're unlikely to know the difference Flowers

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto thank you so much!

I didnt get by the GP online triage this morning, I was told to speak to my midwife about 'sleep and feeding issues' :( don't think I'm even under midwife care at 9 weeks ?

I followed breastfeeding helpline advice and let baby sleep through night if that's what they want to do - she has woken up much more alert and has had 2 calm feeds already this morning so fingers crossed for a better day

That's really good news about the good feeds this morning but I'm a bit Shock about not being given an appointment for a 9 week old baby. I think I'd be sending the practice an email suggesting that they do some training as she's not under a MW at 9 weeks and you wanted her checked by a GP in case she's ill.

justasking111 · 14/07/2023 10:06

I can't believe that a baby of this age is not seen our practice it's a come on down with baby this morning. You will be seen. A firm eMail to the practice manager as to safe practice is needed.

Worth checking their FB group to check.
