Baby rejecting bottle...should I go straight to sippy cup?

My son has been rejecting taking a bottle for a while now (he's breastfed). Since he's 5 months old now and in sight of starting solids, I was wondering if maybe I should start trying a cup instead of the bottle? I am wondering if other people have done this, and if so if it worked or not? Do people use the cups with or without valves? Any advice?

my dd had a sippy cup with a valve from very early on and was fine with it - i think you should just try it - if it works for I can't see any harm in it

My DD (now 13 months) had never had a bottle, I BF her and she then went straight to a cup with no vavle and now drinks from a normal cup.

As empen says try her and see, a lot of thses things are trial and error!

What can I expect with trying a non-valve sippy cup on my 5 month old?

DD went straight to non-valve sippy cup (they are meant to be better for their teeth) at approx 6 months when being weaned. It took her a few weeks to get used to it, but glad we stuck with it as you don't have to mess about sterilising them. Bottles & teats are such a faff and then you'd have another transition period when you needed to move on to cups anyway. Just go for it. Expect very puzzled looks from your DS and probably no attempt to suck (we used to shake the cup for DD to get a few drops of milk or water into her mouth)

MY DS1 drank from a doidy cup from a very young age as I decided not to go down the bottle route when I gave him expressed BM. He drinks beautifully out of an open cup at 19 months but I would not trust him with one for a second even though for most of the time he seems very trustworthy with one. I decided to use a tommee tippee cup without a valve for water when he is not in his high chair and to give him more independence. It took him a little while for him to get the hang of having to suck out of a spout but I found that if you push up the bottom some liquid does come out so he then got the idea that there was something nice inside!

Yes, I did this. Don't expect them to drink as much as you'd expect to start with - took ages for her to drink more than a couple of ounces, to be honest, so as I was weaning her I made sure she had plenty of cheese, milky porridge, etc (she was 6 mo). It does take a bit of perseverance, but she loves her cup and has been merrily guzzling out of it for ages now.
