Hi, I'm new here! I have a 15 week old daughter and until recently breast feeding has been fine and an enjoyable experience - but for the last couple of weeks it has become a nightmare - she wriggles and jerks her head back and cries and it generally ends with us both being upset. I assume she's getting enough milk as she seems healthy and alert and is putting on weight (although her weight gain has been very slow right from the start) and I don't think my diet has changed or anything so I have no idea what's going on. Has anyone else experienced similar? Any tips?

Hi ya - having exactly the same problem - my son will be 16 weeks tomorrow. Would be VERY interested in hearing what the problem could be?!? I also think he is getting enough milk, since he is very alert and happy for 3.5-4 hours, and 7 hours at night.... could it be teething??

Me three! DS is 15 weeks and just like you describe. Was thinking of starting a thread to ask for advice about it, but you've beaten me to it! So, sorry I have no advice myself but given we're all experiencing this maybe it's normal? Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.

they usually have a growth spurt at this time so you could try feeding more often or both breasts if you only give one. Also at this age they become more distracted and want to look around whilst feeding or fiddle with something.

the distraction thing is why these products exist.

Am sure you can get more tasteful ones. I died see a whole top devoted to them once, scary

My sons like me to kiss and nibble their fingers whilst feeding!

I'm glad I'm not alone! Those necklaces look like a good idea - I need to do something as it is not fun at the moment!

Very interested in this thread as DS (thirteen weeks) has just started being a total pain when feeding. He used to just cycle with his legs and fart continuously but now he has turned into a regular fidget-pot - hands, arms everywhere, looking from side to side, chomping etc etc. I'm considering one of the necklaces but just know that I will walk into a client meeting wearing it one day... I just know....

My four-month-old is doing exactly the same thing. Feeding for a minute or so then pulling off, arching back, crying and refusing to have any more. It seems to be escalating over the last few days.

It seems too intense to be something as minor as being distracted. I was wondering if it was teething too? Is there anyone who's been through this who can reassure us that it only lasts a week or so? I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

susiemj · 25/02/2008 08:01

My two-month-old has just started doing the same thing. Perhaps wind?

Does it go with wakefulness in anyone else - says mummy who has been up since 2 with a twisty child who refuses to feed.

dal21 · 25/02/2008 10:29

happened to DS around 15 weeks. he would pull off and scream as if someone was torturing him. Passed within 4-5 days and he settled again.

pinkdelight · 25/02/2008 19:34

Thanks Dal21. That's very encouraging.

Susiemj - it doesn't appear to be wind with mine. More like something developmental or psychological, seeing as it's absent during nightfeeding. He is a bit wakeful but nothing as bad as 2am. Poor you. Let's hope it will pass within the week!

GermanGal · 26/02/2008 15:32

Ohhh thanks so much for the necklace idea - bought it right away (www.lactivist.co.uk) - I hope it'll help, although funnily enough he seems much calmer today?? Having a "parents evening" at my doctors office tonight, will definitely check with him about what's going on.... just so glad to hear it's not just me
