She started the day with her 6am feed she drank 2oz then when she fell asleep I managed to sneak another ounce into her by feeding her while she slept so 3oz in total (she usually drinks 4oz but she doesn’t like the new milk sma althera) she gets about 2 ounces in and once the savage like hunger wears off and she actually realises what she’s drinking she begins refusing it and spitting it out so her 10am feed I mixed with infant gaviscon, and a friend fed her for me, but after about 40 mins of drinking she realised she had only drank half an ounce due to the gaviscon blocking the teat I tried giving her a new bottle but she wouldn’t drink it even in her sleep because she was too exhausted from trying to drink the bottle with the gaviscon, about 11:30am I made her another bottle and this bottle I got her to drink 3oz, an hour later I gave her another ounce of milk 2 hours after that I gave her another 2 ounces, then at 5pm I managed to get her to drink 4oz 8pm she was hungry again so I gave her another 4oz bottle but she only drank 1oz then at 8:30pm she was hungry again so I made her another 4oz bottle and she has just finished drinking it around 15 mins ago she only drank 3oz from that bottle I’m thinking that’s because she had an ounce of milk half an hour before, her feeds have become so irregular with this new milk I’m worried she isn’t getting enough when she was on cow and gate she was in a very good routine of drinking 4oz every 4 hours now it’s all messed up and I hate it because I don’t know if she’s getting enough she will be 6 weeks Old on Sunday do u think she has drank enough so far? She’s due her next bottle 12am then normally she doesn’t wake until 4am then 6am

I just realised she had her first feed at 7:15am not 6 am sorry, as I said her routine has been messed up and she overslept this morning usually it’s 12am-4am-6am (she never sleeps the 4hours after her 4am feed always 2hrs) but this time she slept 3hrs and 15 mins after her 4am feed don’t know if that’s relevant but thought I’d mention just incase

Has produced her usual amount of wet nappies?

AndTheSurveySays · 22/06/2023 23:04

Has she.*

Spockrates · 22/06/2023 23:29

@AndTheSurveySays I don’t count her nappies but everytime I changed her the nappy was wet and I changed her everytime I fed her

We can't know if she's had enough unless we know her weight. The equation to work it out is 2.5 floz per pound in weight in 24 hours.

So if he's say 9 lbs she should have 22.5 floz a day.

If you think they it's the taste of the new milk putting her off you can add some alcohol free vanilla essence or Nesquik to the bottle.

I'd also go back to the GP and ask for a different reflux medication, especially if the gaviscon is blocking the teat.

Just to reassure you, my DC never drank that much but still grew well beyond her initial percentiles and the doctor has been pleased with her growth and development.

Yes it is just a guide but it's a better guide than the ones on the cartons. Not every LO will drink that much and a few will drink more.

Spockrates · 23/06/2023 08:56

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto she was weighed on the 9th of this month and weighed over 9lb don’t know how much she weighs now but HV said she was growing on the 75th percentile

Count her nappies today. Chuck them all in a plastic bag so it's easy to count.

Keep an eye on her skin tone and behaviour and if either of those seams off or not quite right might be good to see the GP just to double check.

bobblyjob · 23/06/2023 09:06

Please don’t add crap to a baby’s milk!!!
Why have you changed milk? Can you go back?

bobblyjob · 23/06/2023 09:07

That was in reference to the milkshake btw

Spockrates · 23/06/2023 09:13

@bobblyjob ages changed milk due to suspected cows milk allergy so I can’t give her the cow and gate again just incase

Get a variflow teat for the bottle if you’re using the infant gaviscon.

My son had severe reflex and never drank more than a few ounces at a time. As long as there’s plenty of wet nappies and they’re gaining weight it’s ok.

some babies need more some need less

addler · 23/06/2023 10:03

Ah are you using neocate? It does taste bloody awful and some babies are a bit more fussy than others.

Alcohol free vanilla extract is what's recommended by health professionals by the way, it's not just adding something in for the hell of it. It's also recommended if you have high lipase breast milk as well.

Try not to stress too much about the exact amount. Some babies are regular and predictable and drink X amount at regular times and that's it. Some babies eat loads one day and hardly anything the next day and you can't work out why or what's different and it drives you fucking nuts.

Just follow her lead and you'll most likely find she'll start to become a bit more predictable as she grows.

In the meantime if she's still really struggling there are several different hypoallergenic milks to try. Some babies prefer particular kinds

Spockrates · 23/06/2023 10:17

@addler no she’s on sma althera which dr is is very palatable and accepted by most baby’s with CMPA she’s not really struggling I can still get the milk into her just not as much she’ll take 2 ounces while awake and an ounce or two while asleep she was way worse on day one but seems more accepting today but still not drinking as much falling asleep during feeds which she didn’t do on cow and gate when she was on cow and gate she’d either cry during feeds or if she didn’t cry she wouldn’t sleep and she’d whinge and cry here and there after her feeds and wouldn’t settle shes definitely a lot more settled on the new milk just not drinking as much of it

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 23/06/2023 14:20

Im so glad that she's more settled.

Just wondered if you wanted to try some of these tips for encouraging sleepy babies to drink more?

nowayhomer · 23/06/2023 14:28

Do try vanilla essence, my dd is on Neocate and it is foul, I don't blame her for refusing it.
Having the same issue the last couple of days where she is completely refusing all bottles, it's stressful isn't it

Pizzaandsushi · 24/06/2023 10:19

You need to trust your baby will drink as much as she needs. I became obsessed with how much my baby drank that I nearly gave him a bottle aversion.
research shows that amino acid formulas make a baby register they’re fuller faster than standard formula and more in line with breastfed babies so they may not need to drink as much.
my cmpa baby never went above 5 ounces at a time. At 6 weeks he was around 2-3 ounces a feed at most. Always put on weight and tracked his centile even though he was nowhere close to the “recommended” daily amounts. As long as your baby is having regular wet and dirty nappies, that’s enough.
