Infant gaviscon blocking teat of bottle help

ive never had this problem when mixing the gaviscon through her usual cow and gate formula but she wouldn’t drink her new formula sma althera so dr suggested mixing the infant gaviscon through it to help her accept it and she does want to drink it now with the gaviscon but it blocks the teat doesn’t matter what teat I put on, i even tried a teat that’s usually too fast for her and it still gets blocked she gets wore out and goes to sleep I think it’s something to do with the way the gaviscon is reacting with the sma althera because this didn’t happen when I mixed the gaviscon with cow and gate

@Spockrates probably a bit late but if baby is tired and hungry now they might accept the new formula without gaviscon?

If not, can't help with exactly what you asked but depending on the reason for changing formula could you (maybe check with doctor first) make up a feed with mostly the old formula (with gaviscon I guess) and then just one Oz/30ml of the new formula. Then if baby takes that you can do the old formula plus 2 Oz new formula etc until you have moved over completely? Obviously not if baby is allergic to the old formula though!!

Ours used to get blocked sometimes but I kept an eye out and would just squeeze the teat and unblock the bits of powder and carry on.

I think you can also try dissolving it in a smaller amount first, mixing enthusiastically, then topping up with the rest of the formula. But probably depends on how you mix it up.

@OhBling I just put it in the bottle and shake it up it never got blocked with the cow and gate it’s only happening with the new formula everytime I squeeze the test to unblock it it immediately gets blocked again 😭

Ah well done, well it's not that ideal but I bet she will get used to the new taste quickly - both of mine were on disgusting allergy formulas at various points and both soon learnt to get on with it 😅🎂

How strange! We are having the exact same problem- have you found a resolution?

SimonaL · 02/01/2024 14:11

I am currently having the same issue, ive been trying to figure this out for 2 weeks, buying new teats, new bottles etc. I can see these little translucent grains of gaviscon stuck to bottle walls and now see that those grains are what blocks the teat. The only solution i found is that if you shake the bottle when it gets blocked it gives you a chance to give some milk until its blocked again. We are on this formula for potentially getting rid of eczema but it has literally done no good and only made his reflux worse as i dont think gaviscon works with this formula, we never had any issues when we mixed aptamil with gaviscon. This formula is ao oily as well, its hard to get the bottles washed properly and also baby vomits religiously after each feed. Basically not helping in any way and only making our lives worse.

Anyway, we are going to go off this formula next week and start on something else (gp is telling us to trial althera for full 4 weeks to see the difference- i think thats a load of crap as there has literally been zero improvement and we are just killing time till he grows out of whatever it is, but i agreed to carry on this time on an off mqgical chance that by the end of week 4 his eczema magically dissapears.

Hi,
I don't suppose you have an outcome of trying sma althera to clear eczema? I'm having same troubles with gaviscon! Sma althera blocking teats and came across this post. Docs said I need to try for 4 weeks, week one no change in eczema so far.
Any info would be great thanks @Spockrates
